Hi-po Crossfire due in May
Hi-po Crossfire due in May
Chrysler apparently has been talking to the CarConnection.com about their 04/05 product plans.

Of note, 330hp Crossfire in May. Convertible/roadster in September. The 330hp coupe was shown in a video (not available on the Car Connection site, but apparently part of the media briefing) outrunning a Boxster.

At Detroit News they are stating the the roadster will come out in May with the high-output coupe.
The high-output roadster is listed for in September.

I'd guess it will be the supercharged 3.2 in slightly different tune (which would explain the slightly different hp numbers and claimed 0-60 (4.8 for the SLK, 'over 5' for the Crossfire).
I'd assume the engine is beefed up for supercharged duty in the SLK and would be in the Crossfire as well.

I'm curious if the new SRT6 engine or mod will replace the existing 215 hp engine. If it is an option, pricing will hopefully be sufficiently greater to insure there is a market for the car with both engines. One could represent a "touring" model while the other would be a "performance" model.
If the new SRT6 replaces the existing engine, I would cry "foul" because it would severly impact the market value of those already sold & penalize those of us who took the plunge to buy a new & untested vehicle. Especially those who paid a premium.
I am just getting ready to put the car away for the winter after a only owning & enjoying it for a short period. I would not look forward to bringing it out in the spring of next year only to find it obsolete.
If anyone acquires addional info on this situation, please post it alon with the source.

I also think it was a bad move on Chrysler's part to even mention that a higher-powered Crossfire is right around the corner. If I had just got interested in the Crossfire and wanted to buy one, and then saw that one with over 100 more hp was coming out in a few months, WHY would I buy the 215hp one? Yea, price would be a factor, but we don't even know what the pricing would be, so it leaves the consumer waiting for the price and not buying one now...
More I thnk about it, I'm getting pissed because the resale hit BIG TIME compared to the 330HP. Mighty you are right, who the heck would buy one now if in may they can get 115HP more for probably pretty close to the same price  in May?? Really stupid IMHO for DCX to mention the hard top replacement--who's going to buy the 215HP one...
Here is the link for the one that asked about the convertible:

Stop worrying and enjoy the car you have now.I've seen this a hundred times....buy a viper with 450 horse and next year the new one has 500 horse...buy a neon and next year they add a turbo.....buy a 4.7 truck and next year the new one has the 5.7 Hemi..As far as resale...you lose the most the first couple years then it levels off... so if you planned on keeping your car more than a couple years your not gonna get hurt that bad! We still have two or three xfires sitting on the lot for 2 months!!!!! I'm sure the new one will be great but I don't see it selling that well it still will have chrysler badging! I barely get the chance to use the 215 horse I got now!

you can drive yourself crazy with this stuff
I'm not crazy about a resale hit, obviously.
But I'm with the guys who say enjoy the car you have. The first Vette was a six cylinder, and it's a collector item now.
The late 70's early/mid 80's Vettes were dogs in terms of performance, barely qualified as sports cars, but guys are buying/restoring/driving them.
On the other hand, the first BMW Z3's were 4 cylinders, and I believe their owners took a big hit when the 6 cylinders came out.
I'm hoping more for the last generation 300ZX model...sold both Turbos and non Turbos, and sold lots of both.
Current Mazda RX8, the auto has about 40 or so hp less than the stick.
Lots of reviewers prefer the normally aspirated Mini Cooper over the blown S.
Who knows what the new Crossfire will be like. It's a sure bet they're not just going to swap out the engine dollar for dollar. They'll probably have to sweat to try to get it on the market for $40K.
IF that's the case, folks who want the Crossfire style may actually be willing to pay leveled prices for the less expensive current cars.
Who knows?

Well, if you compare the SLK320 to the SLK32 AMG, you can roughly get an idea of what the X-Fire SR-T may have to offer.
SLK 320:
215hp
3,120lbs
6.6- 0 to 60
$45K
SLK32 AMG:
349hp
3,220lbs
4.8 0 to 60
$56K
The (base) Crossfire weighs alittle less than the SLK320 and is $11K less at $34K. If we were to extrapolate out the differences between the SLKs and apply the results to the X-fire, you roughly come out with....
Crossfire SR-T
330hp - 349hp
100lbs heavier
4.8 - 5.0sec 0 to 60
$45K
I think that price for a X-Fire is alittle hard to swallow. I'd expect a 5.5sec 0 to 60 and a price of $40K.

The 215hp is fast enough for me! I bought the car because I like the way it looks and it's fun to drive. I did not buy it as an investment or even hoping that it would retain value. SO What if they become difficult to sell after a 330 hp version comes out. There will always be a better, faster, newer car than yours, ours or mine. Who cares. IF you have the money go buy a $300k or $400k sports car and the odds are you will not be outdone for some time. Enjoy what you have.
