Mine gave out so I had to order one from chryslerpartsdirect.com...look for lift cylinder, crossfire...it's listed at $132.60....installation is a snap!
I bought the part produced by MEYLE, it got delivered today and I fitted it, shoul'd have taken 1 minute but it took me 10 minutes due to me messing about with the top plastic cover of the strut when that was completely unnecessary as you only need to pry out the bottom retaining clip from the old strut enough for the strut to be pushable out of it's resting position, after which all you have to do is to pull the old strut right away from the top plastic cover and then fit it the new strut.
The part I bought is, 240 910 0002 MEYLE Hood shock fit MERCEDES BM 170 (SLK) (09/96-04/04), made in Germany.
Do not bother buying the MEYLE brand, it makes a lot more noise than the Stabilus strut and it doesn't pop up fully when you lift the bonnet until you give it a little nudge so it can go all the way up. The MEYLE part doesn't come with the push button either.
I'd stick with Stabilus as it is the original part that was there and we all know it operates perfectly. Next to that I'd only recommend the Febi Bilstein part, there are two that are compatible with the Crossfire, one for about £10, the other for about £37, buy the more expensive part as it has the push button and is guaranteed to be better than the cheaper one. And then I'd also recommend the Lemforder part.

If it is just the gas charged shock that doesn't work and the sleeve and the extension adapter with a button are OK, then you can buy a replacement shock for about $22.00 on Amazon. 1. Take the hood shock support off the Crossfire. 2. Press the extension button and slide the gas charged shock all the way out. 3. Unscrew the extension adapter. With the new gas charged shock, just reverse the procedure. Takes all of 10 minutes, if that.
Searched the forum, but didn't find a definitive answer, so hoping y'all can help me figure this one out.
My lift support under the hood gave out. It no workee at all.
I did find a link to something called a "support rod" on parts.com for $117.30 (yikes). Is this the same part? I've heard it called Gas Prop (in the service manual), a lift support and now, maybe, a support rod....confusing....
Can someone confirm this is the right part? And if anyone has any advice or sources for a decent replacement, that would be great!
Also, I think I heard that the Crossfire is based on the Mercedes SLK, correct? Would a lift support for that model be compatible? Or do I have my facts/models wrong?
Thanks for any help you guys can send my way!
if you live in cold climate usually the rods will not hold up the hood give it till warmer weather an see if it works again , I just bought one even though I live in New England , I opted to replace ghe support rod

You have a couple of options:
1) You can purchase only the cartridge for the hood support, disassemble your defective hood support, insert the new cartridge, re-assemble the hood support & re-install on the hood.
2) You can buy the complete hood support. It can be found for a lot less than the $177.30 in your post above. I've attached a copy of the receipt for the complete hood support I bought a few months back.
Thanks for the "heads-up" on replacing only the shock.
Where can I find the replacement shock? Not the whole strut but just the shock? My strut is in great condition and so "refurbishing" makes sense imo. Thanks for providing a link. If you think the full lift strut assembly is a better value please let me know where to get one. thanks

You can find the insert by doing a search on either Amazon or eBay. I have this one saved on my Crossfire Amazon List:
Be careful to look at the section I highlighted below. Some of the inserts are made with a cap that is slightly larger at this point on the insert. If so, it won't fit into the old strut casing. Make sure you buy an insert from a reputable supplier.

Last year I found the entire hood strut assembly on Amazon for a price less than I could buy an insert - so I bought one. You'll have to check to see if that still exists today.

There were some great prices on RockAuto website! I forget many times about checking out their website only because they add S&H costs which brings the final price up to some of the Amazon sources (that have the S&H costs already buried in the cost). Gotta remember to go look at RockAuto website.

Ordered!
Saw Rockauto too late. Otherwise would have probably just went with them. Thanks for the info and links
