Default Locked Out Thread RE: 6 speed transmission...

I'm a new Crossfire owner (two weeks and 1,300 miles under my belt). I am enjoying my car more than people around me can understand... even with the 6 speed transmission problem.

I enjoy reading "all" post with their different views and opinions. The information gathered here is fantastic and very helpful. Please don't be too quick to lock out a thread just because two folks are not seeing eye to eye, unless it gets "totally" out of hand. It will die a natural death on it's own when intrest on the topic has diminished.

BTW... I test drove mine for almost a hour, and was asked very politely by the salesman if we could head back to the dealership.

Happy motoring to all,

Sorry for locking the thread so quickly. I'm on vacation right now, so I will only be able to check the forums sporadically for the next week. I just wanted to make sure it didn't get too bad, while I wasn't looking

I was looking on www.mercedesshop.com for any trans info.Sure enough a chrysler tech was on there asking the mercedes techs about 6 speeds popping out of gear! One of the mercedes techs said there was a tsb on that problem in 2002.The 1 to 2 synchronizer assemblies weren't put together right and this would cause the popping out of gear.He said MB has misassembled many of these synchro. assemblies.I figured it would be a screw up at the assembly plant and would only pertain to a few cars.It seems to happen to cars with low miles only. I'm not sure how chrysler will handle this problem....fix trans or replace trans. You will have to get your dealer to duplicate the problem first.

I noticed that AZ Outlaws #2815 and my #2801 were pretty close on the assembly line and both had the transmission problem. I wonder if the others were in the same "batch"?

diane,

What did they do to fix yours? Had anymore problems? Mine goes in Friday, they are going to adjust something in the gearbox.

Keep me posted how yours does.

Hey AJ,

Back in October, they tried an adjustment that didn't work, and then they replaced the tranny. I've driven it 5K miles since and it's only kicked out of first twice...good enough for me compared to dozens of times in just a couple hundred miles! There's a bunch of us in a thread on the Technical and Modifications forum called "Manual First Gear Jumps to Neutral Issue" or something like that if you want to check out the whole story plus a few others...

Don't worry, once it's back to normal, you'll soon forget that nervous feeling of "is it gonna happen this time?" and get back that wonderful feeling of driving the coolest car around!

diane,

You hit the nail on the head with your statement, "you'll soon forget that nervous feeling..."

I'll check out thread and glad to hear your car is working good. How long did it take you to convince them to swap out the tranny?

One thing tho, IMO... twice in 5k is still too many times for any car. I'd still push the issue.

I have a new 6 speed crossfire. So far it has been a terrific car.
Fun to drive. 750 miles on it so far.

I hope I don't have problems with it.

AJ,

When it happened the first time, and they couldn't repeat the problem, they gave me the car back and told me I didn't know how to put the car in gear right (I've driven a stick for 18 years). I gave it back to them a week later when it happened a few times, and that time they got it to happen to them (50 mile test drive). They tried the adjustment, gave me the car back, but promised if that didn't do it, they would replace the tranny. I gave them the car back a week later and they put in the new tranny. Unlike a few of the dealers I've read about on here, mine seemed to be very responsive...they were really trying all they could to make me happy...they were learning along with everyone else as the problem seemed to be identified and progressed into a definite issue. They told me that DCX admitted it was not on all the cars, but on a certain set of them (maybe a bad batch of parts or an inexperienced installer?).

As for it happening again twice in 5K miles...yeah, I'm concerned about that, too. The first time was after about 300 miles on the new tranny, but the second time was several thousand miles later...I'll mention it to them on the next oil change, but not sure what they can/will do if they can't replicate the problem. I figure I'll make an issue of it before the warranty is up if it happens again.

In the meantime, the car is just sooo much fun!

My transmission jumped out of first twice I believe. Both times I think I didn't put it all the way in gear or something, so I'm chalking those two up to driver error.

That is exactly how the original thread on the subject got started. I thought the same at first, but became concered and started doing research when it began to happen more and more frequently. In fact that's how I found this forum.

It's a clunky transmission and I didn't think it was my shifting. I've driven all types of cars and 18 wheelers. Never have I experienced this problem in any of them.

Anyway, #2815 goes in this Friday for the first attempt to fix it... hoping for the best. I can't wait to really drive it without the worry it's going to pop out of gear

Hello,
I have driven my car to 3,300 miles on the odo and have not had the misfortune of the car leaving first gear for neutral. I am not certain that this will not happen into the future, but so far so good. I get the impression that my car has had the benifit of many of the forum member's complaints because my car also hasthe radio with the green background and black letters. The only issue I have is with the wind noise at the driver window. The car has driven great. The shifter is relatively smooth and I find the performance spirited. Maybe more of the new cars have had the corrections

I've driven my 6-speed for about 500 miles now and the only problem I have with the shifing is when its cold. 1st to 2nd is a little clunky. And getting it into 1st. After it warms up, the shifting is much smoother.
