Default Chrysler Crossfire EPA gas mileage, auto versus 6 speed

Anyone have the city/highway EPA mileage ratings for the auto and 6 speed Crossfire? I've read the auto is just a sliver slower than the 6 speed both 0-60 and quarter mile. With the rash of 6 speed problems and complaints I might be interested in an automatic tranny (although it will be painful, haven't had an automatic in 10 years)...

The auto is rated at 21 city/28 highway...not sure about the manual...just looking at the sticker of the red one sitting in front of me.

I don't know about a rash of six speed problems.....just a handful of complaints with a couple thousand cars on the road isn't that bad!!

I love my auto. It's torque converter links up nice and tight. Feels every bit as locked as a clutch. No slipping like the old chevy trannys.

The only con is the lag..... When you down shift there's a slight lag time.... Not much, but enough that it's noticable. But as long as you anticipate it, it's not a problem.

Crossfiretech is right...there have only been a handful of problems on a brand new car...I wouldn't worry about the manual too much...

I traded my 6 Speed for an automatic mostly because I didn't like the Stick. The 6 Speed just didn't feel "right," also didn't like all the shifting 1 & 2 were kind of "short." Never had any real problems with it just JDFR.

Love the Automatic. You can shift it "manualy, but I havent really tired it.
Don't want to break anything.

EPA Ratings are as follows:

5-Speed AutoStick is 21/28
6-Speed Manual is 17/25

There was some discussion earlier on the forum about why the manual figures were worse than the automatic figures for city as it is usually the other way around.

One reason is that the 6-speed's first gear has a higher ratio than the 5-speed's. However, it should also be noted that the final drive and the top overall ratio is the same.

Ratios are as follows:

6-Speed
1st 4.459
2nd 2.614
3rd 1.723
4th 1.245
5th 1.000
6th 0.838
Reverse 4.062
Final Drive Ratio 3.270
Overall Top Gear 2.740

5-Speed
1st 3.950
2nd 2.423
3rd 1.486
4th 1.000
5th 0.833
Reverse 3.147/1.93
Final Drive Ratio 3.270
Overall Top Gear 2.740

5-Speed has 2 reverse ratios depending on the transmission mode switch (winter/standard).

Just looking at the ratios, I'd expect the 6-sp to take-off first but I'm not expecting too much of a difference crossing the line at 60mph and at the 1/4 mile.

There is a lag on the AutoStick but it is not as bad as the lag that I've found on some TipTronic Porsches.

I feel that the hold-left feature on the 5-Speed (Mercedes) AutoStick certainly compensates for it unlike the other Chrysler AutoStick. It almost makes it no longer sequential in nature, allowing you to shift from 5 to 2 in a single action.

Thanks guys.

Looks like I'll be looking at an automatic. The performance is, for all intended purposes, equal to the 6 speed, gas mileage is way better, and I have faith the tranny is very strong.
I'm thinking the reason why Mercedes offers the auto only on the SRT6 and the SLK AMG is that the 6 speed may not be up to snuff for that kind of power.
Also, I've heard the shifter is less than par. Rubbery feel?

Koltzyc always been a "stick man," but purchased the auto because of the manual featurec and glad I did. Yes, there is that lag, but once you know that you change your driving style accordingly. I live in the mountains and find that I use this manual feature a lot. Also, fast freeway offramps find me "slapping" downshifts rather than hitting the brakes. And then, of course, heavy stop and go traffic demands the auto.

I agree 100 % Reg.....I had a Mustang GT with a 5 speed for the past 4 years going over the hill every day.........my left leg got very athletic during those stop and go creeps. I am very happy with this auto shifter. I really like the way it learns when to shift.

GW: I commuted over our "hill" for several years in a manual Taurus SHO. Could always tell my fellow manual commuters by the overdeveloped left calf. A couple of the offramps I was referring to are Granite Creek and Mt. Hermonc love the radius decrease and the way the XF snakes through 'em at speed!

Guys,

Does the Xfire have adaptive technology in the automatic tranny? I've heard that some automatic cars drive like doo-doo until the tranny "learns" how you drive...

Yes, as long as the battery is not disconnected, the tranny will learn and remember your driving style.

Speaking of CHiPsc That Hiway 17 that Gail and I are reffering to has a speed limit that is lower than the spoiler actuation speed. So, every time I come across a patrol car that ol' up spoiler is kinda like waving a red flag in front of a bull. As in "Hi there, I'm speeding."

I've got a 6-speed and have been averaging between 26-28mpg on about a ratio of 85% freeway, 15% street driving. I have just added the POWERCHIP GOLD 91 software to my car and was told to expect even better mileage. I will post in about 2 to 3 weeks to let you all know what kind of mileage I'm getting. The POWERCHIP GOLD 91 has already increased the power to my CROSSFIRE, which is noticeable. Increase of 17 HP is what I am told to expect. Again, I will post in 2 to 3 weeks my thoughts on the software upgrade. Price, $640 for software upgrade. Till then...
