Default Fuel Guage issue

Hey guys,

I am looking into finishing up some issues in my crossfire. My gas gauge goes up and down. Sometimes it is all the way in the empty sign and sometimes it is full. Whenever it is full it goes down pretty fast even though i just filled my tank with gas.

What do you think might be wrong?

Thanks for any help.

My guess would be a bad float level unit.

You will probably have to remove the gas tank to get to it It's usually mounted at the top of the tank. I read that your car was in a flood. did any of the dash gauges get wet?

The trunck was mostly the place that was flooded. The water didn't get up to the Dash.
I was able to see a guage in the trunk ( right on top of the gas tank). Is this the float level unit?

Is it hard to bring down the gas tank in the Roasters?

Thanks

I just read in the service manual that it can be accessed by removing the cargo area interior trim panels and the fuel tank partition retaining bolts and the fuel tank partition.

If you take out the aluminum plate that is in the trunk behind the bulkhead you will see the gas level sensor, if it got wet then maybe it's just a corroded wire.

I already removed everything. I can see a device stuck into the gas tank with 2 plugin going into it. I have tried to remove that device but i couldn't. I unplugged those wires and cleaned the connectors but it still didn't work. Can i test the connection in those wires?

Thanks

Thanks for the service manual. I will look into it further and see if i can find a way to access the fuel tank.

I doubt it is anything coming from the dash. Everything else works great in the dash. It have to be from the fuel tank.

There should be a series of tests described in the manual you can do with a multimeter on the unit. Dealers probably skip the tests and change everything. LOL

I started working on it and found out that my Gas tank sending unit is the problem. I already bought another for approximately $50 from ebay but i am looking to install it.

I can get to my sending unit from my trunk, the manual talked about a special tool that should be used to remove it which i don't have. Do you know of any other tool i could use to replace this part?

Also does anyone know of an alternative tool i could use to operate the convertible manually? My car doesn't have the multi-purpose tool and i have searched every where.

Thanks for any help.

Hey guys,

I was able to remove the sending unit without the special tool listed in the service manual. I used a basic screw driver and hammer (I know old school hehe) but it worked. I replaced it with my new sending unit. My fuel gauge is right now on "Full" i don't know why it is like this but it is definitely not fluctuating or falling to the lowest even when my gas tank is full.

My guess will be because the gas think was full when i inserted the new signal. I will give it time to see if it will balance out.

I definitely think that the fuel sending unit was my issue.

I will let you guys know.

You could try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. I don't know if it will reset it but won't hurt to try.
