Default key fob problem

I've done a search but have been unable to find a similar situation

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyways, my car came with 2 key fobs,

One key fob works great (locking / unlocking / panic)

the other doesn't work (CAN start car / Manually unlock + lock )

Now, today I lost (long story) the "good" key fob, and am stuck with the rather useless one

the one which buttons do not work, rather I have to manually lock / unlock everything
It starts the car and what not, it just doesnt register the buttons

I noticed the little red light on the keyfob doesn't light up(whereas on the good remote it would)
I've replaced the batteries 2x (first time with batteries from another car key fob, the second time with brand new batteries from autozone)

neither time the little red light works

I've tried to "reprogram" the key using the steps outlined on this forum to no avail

and now I'm stuck

anyone have any idea whats going on here?

First thing that I would do is figure out if it is even putting out a signal. You might be able to do this at an auto parts store that sells "programmable" remotes. I have seen some before where you put the your remote up to their display and hit any button. It lights up to tell you what type of signal it is putting out, there are two different types I believe. If neither of the lights light up then there is nothing else I can think of...

There are two parts : the transponder (works with the ignition to start your car) and the transmitter (unlocks your car). Obviously the transponder is working. If you suspect the transmitter is bad, buy a fob off of ebay ( I got one for less than $30), open it up (do a search in this forum - there are step by step instructions on how to do this), pull out the transponder, and replace it with the one from your current fob. Then program the ebay fob per the instructions.
