Default Windshield vs. Gravel

The gravel won. Got hit by one big-assed stone on Saturday; just to the right of where I look. Small divot on the outside layer, but it turned into a quarter-sized eruption in the sandwich layer. Replacement (aftermarket) $660. My deductable is $1K. Bummer

Check around next time... some insurance companies have "0" dedectable glass coverage. We do here in AZ. It doesn't raise the price of my policy... We go through windsheils like crazy here. I've replaced 7 or 8 the last eight years alone on just two vehicles....

I dread the thought of them ripping the molding etc out. My dealer out sources that kind of work... when time comes I'll take it there that way I'll have some recourse if it gets screwed up..

Goodluck

Sorry to hear that

On Friday my windshield took a stone in the same area. It left three nice sized pits, but didn't do any greater damage. I guess I should be happy.

i've about decided that the benz windshield is inferior. seems that any kind of hit makes it chip and that's not a problem i'm used to having on my other cars.

anyway, i don't trust the shop to get a new one put in without screwing up something so i just have the chip-guy do patches at 15-20$ each. seems to work ok and all you can see when he's done is a really tiny (head of pin-tiny) gray spot where the chip was.

Depending on size and location, doing a "patch" is illegal in many places. Here in VA, they have a chart they hold up while sitting in the driver's seat, and if a chip is in the "primary view cone" they are prohibited from doing a "patch". At least, that's the way it was last chip I had.

Reg...sorry to hear that. I to have had my fair share of rock dings on the winshield......front bumper......hood . Hy17 commute in not to forgiving.
I also have and will keep my 0 deductable comprehensive for just such an occation. Had to replace the winshild on my suberban last year, that was 1k.....ack. I had just about added a deductable to the comp. to try and lower the costs but it was only going to save about $150 a year so I gave up on that idea.

OKc $794 later I have a new windshield. Could have saved about $150 on an aftermarket 'shield, but opted for the MoPar as the AM piece didn't match (greenish tint).

BTW: Those plasticky silver/grey pieces bordering the windshield snap into place (with great difficulty)

no crap! I gotta call my insurance co. tomorrow and see what's my glass deductible. Used to be $0 a couple cars back, but I think I changed that to get a rate reduction a couple years ago.

Most insurance companies now are trying to get away from paying windshield replacements. Used to have a separate deductible for it like $150 where most repair shops will waive if you ask for a discount or have a coupon from the yellow page book. They'll scare you that your deductible will increase when you claim little stuff like windshield replacements. Allstate is one of those companies. ops: ops:

FYI: My insurer is State Farm.

IMHO: Insurance companies have brilliantly positioned themselves so as to maximise rates and minimize payouts (Duh!). But they have gone so far with this strategy that a lot of us do everything we can to avoid a claimc yet pay higher rates each each. The situation with the broad spectrum of insurance (car, medical, etc.) is in a critical mode that will have far-reaching effects over the coming years. As a life-long entrepreneur I see the continual eroding of creativity, small business, and the necessary risk-taking that fuels a vital society.

Gee, i'm glad I got that off my chest.

Since you brought up company names... check out Nationwide sometime. I pay nothing for glass coverage and have no deductible. I can also take it to any shop. Since being here in AZ for the last eight years I've had maybe 6-7 windows changed. They've done right by me for a lot of years... and the price is right. The free glass "may" be an AZ thing because it wasn't that way when I was back east.
