Can I just remove the console cover to replace the cigarette lighter?
The wire from the dash cam passes within a few inches of the glove box after it exits the window side trim if I recall. It then passes through the dash to the ICM fuse panel. Adding the piggyback fuse to a light fuse sets of the burnt out bulb light, why would it do that beats my feeble brain. There is more resistance not less.
Does pushing in the cigarette lighter and heating up that metal coil cause a light out indicator ?
Nope.
Why would piggybacking a load of less magnitude than this cause the bulb out indicator to light ?
I have had my Garmin wired this way for 4 years, never a bulb out indication.
Nope.

I have no clue why it does it, sometimes the light does not come on, then it flickers and comes on and stays on. Or it will be on, then flicker and go off.
Maybe the adapter is wonky?
By the way, if you have a GPS unit visible from the exterior of the car you should hide it. My neighbor had his window broken so it could be stolen in his driveway. Kids I guess, my wife's car was entered in our driveway, nothing taken. We live in a good area, but these kids steal anything. I found someone's wallet in my recycle bin, the money was gone but the cards, licence etc were still there. Who cares about the GPS but the window and agro costs more. Take a baseball bat to them and you are in deep doo doo.

If is off now, we will see for how long.
I realized today I had the same problem - no power to the power outlet.
Read the whole thread but still a bit confused as to what i need to be doing. I don't think it's the fuse as the light in the glove box comes out just like always so no issue there.
What could be the problem? From what some of you said it could be that it doesn't need complete replacing? But if I had to replace it, where do I order the replacement part and what is the correct name for what I am looking. I hope it's not the whole silver panel including the ash tray assembly etc.
Be great to get some more info on what I am looking for and what the culprit could be! Thanks guys!

I am bumping this old thread since I was not able to find a definitive answer in my searches to answer this question and thought it may help the next owner looking for help with this. Sure you can dismantle the whole radio / shifter / console area to access this Cigar Lighter but there is a MUCH easier way.
If you remove the console side panel (the black piece the covers the side of the console up to the glove box), you can actually reach in from behind and PUSH the lighter OUT. This console cover is held in by two screws, a plastic one on the vent cover that just needs a ¼ turn to remove, then a single philips screw that is behind that vent cover. The lighter is in there snug, but with a bit of effort, it will push forward. I also used a plastic trim removal tool to pry it up from the front with ZERO damage to the surrounding pieces. It is just held in by pressure clips.
I spent more time trying to figure out how to unplug the socket than I did getting it out. Luckily having the replacement in hand made it a bit easier!
Good luck boys and girls~

If we compare these two pictures side by side we should see the method by which they are unlatched from one another.

The pictures are helpful but I still wonder if there is a locking tab. The curved rectangular piece on the top looks like it might release.
I only see one wire. Is there a black one in the shadows? There are two tabs and I doubt there is a body ground in this location so there must be another wire.
I thought mine was cured with a new fuse but I think it truly is broken. I changed the fuse but it burnt out shortly after. I think the remaining metal tube creates a high resistance at the contact surface. So waiting for an eBay purchase with a lighted ring surround.

The very bottom center metal strap of my cigarette lighter socket came apart. Bummer. Good thing I don't smoke, but miss plugging in the GPS. Squirrel Crusher
I am guessing that you push down on the white mark on the top and swing open that whole side and release it.
Failing that give it to a five year old, they'll have it open in a second.
