So. Over the last 4 weeks I have gotten gas 5 times. After each time (each stop is generally taking the tank from 1/4 to Full) I start the car and within 1 minute I hear a beep, my trip and odometer readings vanish and I see the "Hi Oil Level" Indicator icon where the trip computer is. It flashes exactly 25 times then goes off. After it goes off, my current trip mileage and odometer readings go back to normal and all is fine. This has happened EVERY one of those 5 times getting gas. Started suddenly. I have obviously checked the dipstick when the engine is both hot and cold and neither have given me readings above Normal/Max. The car runs tip top when all of this is going on. Apparently I wanted to give myself a laugh and called the dealer....they had no friggen idea...laughter ensues. Any Ideas???

Put black tape over your odometer and problem solved. Warrrenty?

 

happened to me too. Dealer fixed it - it was corrosion on the connector for the oil level sensor.

Yep,, Same here, I've only gased up my XF about 4 times, since I bought it.. And out of those 4 times the last two times the same thing happed to me. I hit the trip **** and it went away.. Also, my oil level is OK..

 

How old is your battery? Problems like this can be a signal that your battery is at the end of it's life.

Normally it's the trim that takes the wrap, while batteries take the rap for electrical faults.

 

What is there to explain? Stop, put the car in neutral, set parking brake, exit vehicle, pump gas, enter vehicle, release brake, depress clutch, shift into 1st, drive away.

I don't think I've ever turned off my car while refueling in 30+ years of driving.

 

i leave my car running with the auto start, i never just leave the keys then there.. try explaning that to ur insurance company....

 

John, not a good idea not because of the normal safety things. But there is a good posibility of setting off the check engine light while putting in fuel with the engine running. Something with the amount of air through an open cap. Happens quite often with our fleet at work.

Yeah, like not talking on your cell phone (which couldn't ignite gas fumes if you tried to make it work - Mythbusters tried it). Actually, the *most* dangerous thing I see people doing at gas stations, especially now in the winter - they start pumping the gas, get back in their car, get out and finish fueling. Excellent setup for a static spark, which I *have* seen ignite the fumes around the fuel door.

But, for the most part, I recall, as a kid, the full service gas stations where the greasy guy with the lit cigarette hanging out of his mouth would come out and pump your gas. Yet, you never heard of gas stations blowing up back then, did you? You have to wonder why not. Back when things were less safe, it seems less bad things happened somehow.

 

It's illegal in our area and the pump attendant/cashier will switch off the power to the pump if he sees it and cares a rat's ***. All the pumps that I have seen lately are hands on at the Self Serve stations, so you have to freeze your butt.
Mind you if we do survive any fireball from the lit gas, we Canadians do not have to pay for the hospital. Although the gas company will make you pay for the gas you used and the new gas station.

 

Most of the signs I read around me in gas stations explicitly say to turn off the engine before refueling. I would imagine that there would be some method for their madness.

 

They also say not to use a cell phone.

The method is, the print whatever they want. Having a basis in fact or reality not required.

About it blowing up, starting on fire, or something else?

 

My guess is he is concerned with exactly what he stated.
