Jamikest, I have to admit you are convincing me. I had a nail in my tire early on but didn't know it. The low tire light came on at the beginning of my 40 mile commute, and I admit that I drove another 120 miles (home and back to and from work the next day) because I couldn't even tell which tire was low and figured it was minor.

When I took it to the dealership, they discovered the nail and that I had been driving on a tire that was 10 lbs low. They fixed the flat no problem. But it was those tough sidewalls that kept that tire going without any other damage.

Especially considering that I'm not one to do regular maintenance like checking tire pressure, I'm thinking your advice might be best (although I'm still gonna make the purchase at Discount Tires...the dealer gets all my other work. Thanks for taking the time!

i can't ever remember thinking "gee, those tires are just holding on too well, i wish they would slip more."

i've got well over 30K$ in the car and, although i don't push it really, really hard very often, when i do i expect to get every bit of handling i possibly can. think about it, when you do need that extra traction you probably need it to save your life.

i'll spend the money to get the best i can find.

is the money wasted? i really hope so.

You can make your tires last longer if you don't dog your car all the time.

But what fun would it then be? It only looks cool cause you can drive the hell out of it- what fun would it be if you never did?

Where are you guys/gals coming up with $2,000 for tires? Based on my research, there are 7 tire makes available for the Crossfire. I don't see anything there that adds up to $2,000.

Compare Tire Search Results

Based on my experience with tires and the treadwear rating of the OEM tires, you should expect anywhere from 15-20k out of a set. That could probably increase to 20-25k if rotation were an option but it is not.

these tires can be moved from side to side that's the only amount of rotating we can do. But it is a way to make them last a little longer.

Forget over 20k with your CF for tires... Not likely to happen. Expect 10-20K avg tire life. This is assuming OEM Z(W) tires. They are designed soft to grip and you cant have grip with tread wear. Which do you want- a car that is easy on the wallet- or a fun to drive, awesome looking car? If you wanted the easy on the wallet/no maintenance/cheapo tires then you purchased the wrong car!

As I've said before in other tire threads on this forum, I think $2k is a lot of money for a set of tires on what is basically a blvd cruiser. The car is fun to drive, but a true high performance car it's not. With max speed limits in this country of 75 MPH, unless you're racing or auto crossing your car, I truely believe other tires at half the price will suffice.

I agree with pageoneresults, there are other "quality" tires out there at half the cost. One of which is the Goodyear F1... not exactly"cheapo" in my book. In fact I would wager the "average" XF driver would not notice the difference between any of the tires avalible in our size when compared with the Michelin Pilot 2. Everyone to their own choice tho...... if you want to spend the $2k, go for it.

Latest update:

I've got 19.5K miles on my Michelin PS2 tires and I had them checked this past weekend at the America's Tire store that has always taken good care of me. All of them still have 6/32 inch except for the right front that has 8/32. I had him check on availability and there's no problem getting the 18" front -- 26 at a nearby store -- but they only have 4 in stock of the rear 19" tires...still not low enough for him to worry about (I offered to prepay and buy the tires now so they would be sure to be available if I needed them). The two different tires cost less than $350 and $250? (I can't remember exactly...$327?...but much less than I thought based on some old posts).

Don't need new tires yet...he thought I had another 4K miles or so more to go.

Default Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

I prefer the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's.
These tires are available in the sizes/speedratings required for the Crossfire.
They have good wet/dry performance,
Plus they have a kick-butt treadpattern fit for a kick-butt car!!

There are definately a good looking tire. BUT, keep in mind, unlike the two factory tire options, that Eagle is DEFINATELY a uni-directional tire. You WILL have to have them remounted when you try to do rotation, unlike the factory tires which you can rotate side-to-side yourself.

Point well taken. I think I'd still go with the Eagles and leave them alone. I wouldn't think rotating side to side would be that benificial. Too me the monetary savings is my concern. If the Michelin's come down in price, I'll stay with them otherwise I have to go with Goodyear's....

I worry more about availability than the price....

Having to still wait days or even weeks for a tire is just crazy....

I really thought this would have been corrected by now.

Apparently everyone has overlooked Tirerack and Continentals websites where warranties are discussed. The All season performance tires, though not Z rated, are great tires, and will give the XFire more versatility than the Michelins and will still handle phenomenally well at high speeds, rain or shine. The ContiTouringContact's which come as an optional tire, also have a 60,000 tread life warranty therefore there should be no need to pay for replacements at 15 - 20K.

See this link, for tire specs applicable to this warranty.

I wouldn't get the Pilots again. I've been thru 2 sets thanks to bubbles in the sidewalls. Michelin refuses to admit there is a problem. A $300+ tire that can't take Chicago streets must be junk. I've just put Goodyear F1's on the car and they came with a road hazard warranty, so Goodyear at least stand behind it's product.

I highly recommend TireRack.com for tires. I bought some tires from them last summer (pre-Xfire days). I ordered some Pirelli A/T tires for my Jeep at lunch on a monday, and received 4 tires tuesday morning. Had them installed at a Firestone for about $50. The shipping was only $35 i think... which is less then the tax i would have had to pay if i bought them in state. The tires i bought were top-of-the-line, and were less expensive then the no-name tires at Discount Tire.

I was very pleased with TireRack.com ... I plan to buy my X-Fire replacements from them in about a year or so.
