Default New Tyres Plz Help !!!

Hi,

I live in the UK and have Michelin PS2, I now need to change my tryes as they are getting worn out. I had a look for the same ones, and have been quoted £270 per rear tyre and £170 per front, can someone please recommend and other good brands out there. As getting all 4 fitted will cost a huge amount of money for me, totalling £880!

I do around 6 thousands miles per year mostly from and back to work, so I am looking for tyres which will be good in summer and the wet wintery snowy months.

Many Many thanks

N.K

I had P/S 2's and they did not last very long on my car. You may want to look at tire wear ratings. I got really good milage and a decent price for Yokohama Advan S4's. Some of the members really like General Tire as well.

Thanks for the reply, I was wondering how much rain and snowy weather you have, where you are. And I didn't quite understand when you quoted ''Some of the members really like General Tire as well'' Thanks

He lives in Texas, so not too much snow is my guess.
I would guess you may have a better response from people in the UK with specific knowledge of available tires and pricing.
As to his comment
''Some of the members really like General Tire as well''
I think he means that some of the members really like General Tire as well.

Hankook Ventus are popular tires also.

Thanks for your reply, where I live I have snow for about 2 weeks and then rest is dry in summer and wet in winter, Can I ask what tyres you have and what you recommend for my conditions. I read on ''Hankook'' that they make too much noise when driving, can you clarify Many thanks.

I still have the stock Conti's on my car, but I will go with the Hankooks when the time comes.
Read this thread on the Hankooks.

My car never sets its wheels on snow, it hibernates for the winter.

Just got a new set of Advan S4's on my XF actually, and before them, had a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S's on. I can say that the Michelin's did not wear well and were very lackluster compared to how good they were rated (not to mention expensive as all hell).

The Advan's on the other hand, despite their lower ratings (which I was concerned about), are pretty solid tires. Snow melted here before I got to test them in it, but if their snow traction is as good as their wet and dry traction, snow should be no problem. So far, they've pleasantly surprised me. They ride pretty well too and aren't too expensive, at least here. We generally get a good amount of snow here (got 20-some inches in one storm this year), so snow is a concern for me as well.

If you can get your hands on a set of Continental DWS's, get them. A lot of XF owners seem to love those. I've heard they have a softer sidewall though, which can affect handling quality.

We have snow and icy roads about 2-3 weeks a year, I cant take my car out as wheels just spin and the traction control kicks in even when I turn it off. You mentioned '' Continental DWS'' any reason why you didn't choose them in the first place over the ''Advan S4's'' I am really lost on this as I never knew '' Michelin Pilot Sport'' rear tyre was going to cost me £270 per tyre !!.

You do not seem to be getting anywhere, you have posted on the Coupe, Europe and the UK forums.
I think you would get more answers if you did a post on the wheels brakes and tires forum. Even Search may yield a gem or two.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you buy a second set of 18" front wheels for your Crossfire, and mount another set of 225/40-18 front tires on those, and use that as your rear tires in the winter time.

This will give you better traction in rain and snow in bad weather, and will save the larger rear tires for the summer months, saving you money.

If you were to read your owners manual, in the section under "Starting and Operating", you would see that it recommends this.

BC.

If money is the biggest issue....I've put about 17,000 miles on a set of Achilles ATR Sports 225/40/18s (All-Season-W speed rated) on the front & have been happy with everything about them....available for about $68 from onlinetires.com & there are 265/30/19s for about $100 & 275/30/19s ...about 115-120 $. Did well in snow this year. 400 UTQG rating & look like they'll last 40,000 miles.

Visit tirerack.com

They have complete reviews and more to help in your hunt for your tires!

The DWS are right now the best bet. quality wise, money wise etc....
And they should last maybe 30k or more,
30k means 30 k miles...

It does rain in England, it does snow etc...

I have DWS, I am happy.. they are not as good for cornering than my previous SUMITOMO but I can drive day and night, rain, light snow etc... with them I am all set

Good luck

Max

Hey! We get snow in Dallas! Last year we set a record for the amount of snow we got including one storm that dumped 14 inches on us. Even worse we are known for ice storms and I had to drive everday for four days on ice which us much worse than snow. The Advans did a great job in the snow and ice. The only thing about Texas is that a week after a snow storm we are back in the '70's

Many of us here won't drive the XF in the snow - so reviews of how tires do in the snow aren't always easy to find .... but many here DO drive all year around and have indicated what tires they like.

I went with Hankook V12s and LOVE THEM - but I don't drive in the snow. I can't remember what was said about them in the snow, but they are quiet and the car drives like it's on RAILS now!

Go read threads in the "Tires and Suspension" area here and see what comments and advice you find.

I also think the advice about getting two front rims and mounting a "winter set" of tires is a very good idea!!!
