as long as you havent driven it and they flush it out, there should be no ill effects...(my laymans opinion)

even driving it with the ATF probably wouldn't hurt it as long as it was only a short period. Just make sure they note the error on your work order and that they cycle the transmission through all the gears while flushing to get it all out.

I've heard of racers filling the crankcase with the stuff in the off season and draining it out when putting the car back in service. Apparently it won't hurt and will dissolve every kind of sludge, rust, gunk and when drained leaves the inside like new. I knew a guy that would buy old cars that were stored for years and fill the cylinders with ATF. It would loosen the rings and dissolve the rust.

I think your car will be undamaged.

The ATF oil is in the engine. I expect different ATF's in the auto and manual boxes.
What should the mechanic write?
I will not mix up fluids again.

Did this 'nechanac' touch anything else? Inspect it carefully.

to late for me to help at the dealer. for a bit of peace of mind we run atf in the fuel in our diesel trucks in the winter. helps clean out the sludge. i realize this isn't a diesel but you can run it if you had to. if he flushed it immediately there should be no issues.

rest eazy!

I would have made them drain it, add fresh Mobile 1 ( although I think he is the Amsoil guy) run the car for 10 minutes, drain again and then add new oil again....ALL AT NO CHARGE.

Thanks Guys,

After going for a beer at the ice house next door while the XF was getting some new fluids, I decided to go back and check. then I see the Dude mechanic, pouring ATF in the engine.

I had to tell them to flush the engine, refill and flush again then refill with Amsoil.

Then time to pay, Bill was 30% over what was said ( WHICH PISSED ME OFF)... got this corrected but no discount or whatsoever.
according to my last minute expenses, time and twice I stopped them to put ATF. Twice!

When they were to refill with AMSOIL, the guys already mixed up with bottles of oil motor and bottle of ATF. ( ready to go back in the engine ) for the second time.

NOW I was really getting pissed off.

Going back , time to Pay. No discount as they wasted 3 quarts of ATF, new AMSOIL etc... time....

The boss was gone... the manager did not know **** or did not care.

Will be back on Monday! for Sure , Believe me.

One more time... a waste of time.

Well, I would not have seen the guy pouring ATF in the engine, for sure , I would have F... up it. Then maybe I would have got a new engine... ahahah yeah right maybe after a little lawsuit..

Anyway got home and annoyed as HELL.

Thanks guy for your replies... And yes I said" TEXT ME" ;-)

Be well, be good...

Have a good friday,

Max! and yes... I am trying to be the AMSOIL guy ;-)

ATF is a great engine cleaner and I have seen it used many times to de-sludge and engine. You don't drive around though, you just let it idle and warm up then drain it.

In the older days we used to add a little ATF to the crankcase at each oil change to help clear out the sludge. It worked great, but in the newer cars with the special additives in ATF I would be hesitant. That said, i just surveyed several of the master technicians here and they say that if you add one quart or less to the vehicle and drive it you still wouldn't have a problem. ATF is high detergent lubricant. If you filled the crankcase with ATF, it would have a problem getting up to proper oil pressure since it is such a low viscosity.

Did you get the facility to write on the invoice what they did? That will protect you in case you need to prove that their work caused a problem. You might still go back and have them document that info. if you left there.

That's just my dos centavos.
