I realize there have been plenty of threads about rattles and creaks before, but none of them have really helped me..

(A lot of people might be wondering about me selling the XFire, long story, but ended up keeping the XFire to drive around the summer time in MI and I go to school in FL with my CTS-V, I should really post pictures..!)


I've had the XFire for a while and it was great, until I got the (older) CTS-V, man is it quiet (the good interior kind).

When I go into my XFire I really want to chop off my ears. Creaks, rattles. everywhere.

First, it seems like there's a nasty rattle in both of my doors by the large speakers at the bottom, the speakers I checked are tight so they aren't moving, I'm not sure what it is. Sounds like something is rolling around but I can hear it on both doors/speakers...and it only does it on bumpy roads..

Secondly, the whole interior drives me nuts. No matter where I press my finger, I get little squeaks or creeks, and they are noticeable when driving on our MI roads (bumpy bumpy bumpy)..

Anyone have any fixes? I fixed the trunk rattling issue by re-adjusting the bumpers and the electrical tape but the whole console/doors still leave me nuts....

I also need to fix the wind noise at around 30-50 mph, it's awful.

Any suggestions or anyone else with creaks/squeaks/rattles and they fixed them, just post here.. the information would be useful to other people as well i'm sure even if it doesn't help me

 

While I don't have rattles in my doors, I was advised by Onehundred80 (Dave) about the potential to develop an elusive one. He helped me with the Pelked1 mod (Best Bang for the Stereo Buck) and he expressly advised me to ensure that the assembly of soldered wires and capacitors and other bits were well packed into the door being careful not to create a potential rattle.

Two additional notions emerge at this point. One - this is intelligent, sage advice thus, Dave must have overheard it from someone else. Two, it is possible that our 180 had this same rattle but was unable to resolve it in time.

Seriously, if you did the upgrade, pull the little panel out near the speaker and look at the "assembly" from that perspective. If you bought your car used, pull the little panel out near the speaker and look at the "assembly" from that perspective. Onehundred80 would not have offered this guidance unless it was potentially a problem.

I have no other ideas but this may be plausible.

 

Didn't someone baseball bat your windows a few years back?

Are you sure all the broken glass is out and not trapped in the body panels?

 

I do appreciate the response, but the car was bought in '05 and barely used, I don't think the previous owner (chrysler exec) did the mod. in fact, I know he didn't! I took apart the doors a while ago and put dynamat in them...

 

Haha I'm surprised you remember that!!

I did take off the door panel and cleaned what I think was ALL of the glass, but my other passenger side window was not broken and seems to be making the same rattling noise, I think.


Steve, does your car not rattle/creak/squeak here on these Michigan roads?

Yup..... I traded in the Cross on another Challenger that's entirely, completely, 100% bone stock.

 

Looks like a great opportunity to tell about my mysterious rattle adventure.

One day I noticed a rattle, like something rolling around in the top vent area in the dash just below the windshield. I figured that from the sound of it that maybe a coin or nut/bolt may have fallen into the defrost vent and was sliding around.
I removed the defrost vent plastic thingy and dropped a magnet down there and drove around hoping to fish out the offending object. No dice. Did the drive to Crossfires Across America meet with the dang thing rattling the whole way. We’re talking months of dealing with the noise. I was even wondering how I would ever be able to sell the car (like that would ever happen!) with such a bad rattle.
Any hoo. Weather starts getting to where it time to break out the roadster (forgot to mention this occurred on the roadster not the coupe). So I'm driving on the weekends, top down of course (always) and the rattle is of course still there. Weather is nice in the afternoon but it was still cold in the morning. So one day I decide to drive to work (morning) and since it's cold I actually drive the car with the top up.
Whoa! The rattle is actually coming from the upper windshield frame where the top latches into. So I drive to work and when I leave for the day (afternoon, warm) I put the top down, inserted my magnet, did a left and then a right turn of the steering wheel and CLICK I got it!
5/16th 1/4" socket had dropped into the hole at the top of the window frame. All of that aggravation and pain just because of that!

Boy do I feel better now that it's fixed.

You sure do love those Challengers, huh?

I guess I'm lucky, mine is still as tight and quiet as the day I bought it. The good thing is not a lot of pot holes here.

 

Also a MI driver but no unusual noises in either XF. Of course, neither are as quiet as my Audi A6 either. Re wind noise, I did have some on the rear of my A6 driver's window due to the seal not being tight. The cheap fix which has worked for a few years: purchased some 1/4" clear aquarium hose and slid it into the groove in the rubber seal to press tighter against the glass. I also had a rattling in the driver door of the roadster and the dealer checked (still under warranty back then) and found a couple loose screws in the window track. Once tightened, the problem disappeared. PS - My son is a student at FSU and has the 2007 XF with him down there.

 

From the description of "both doors" I'm betting this is it. I had the same problem with my 04, first on the right and a year later on the left.

 

Same here....2004 with 66000 miles and not a single rattle etc

You can make any panel in my car creak just by pushing on it. I reduced alot of noise by putting sticky back felt between the plastic door panels and door metal all the way around the door panel. I just keep telling myself "it's a sports car" and deal with it. Horrible interior.

 

I have rattles from the plastic parts rubbing in the interior...I haven't addressed those too much yet, but one noise I fixed was with the seat belt contact switch. It was rubbing against the center console and possible the leather seats. I wrapped felt tape around the contact switch and problem solved.

 

GW, feel free to tell me to look it up in the service manual, but can you share any info on the best way to get to the window track screws, I have never messed with mine, and I bet they need to be tightened. Thanks

 

My cubby hole lock "surrounds", rattle at about 60 KM. Knowing what it is helps,but yes it drives you CRAZY! i'll have a look at the weekend. I've also backed some of the panels with double sided tape,big help.

 

The track screws would be accessed in the large cut out at the bottom of the door in photo #3 with the window fully lowered.
Other adjustment screws can be got at with the window in the position shown in #3.
