Default Auto or Manual?..that tis the question

I haven't had a chance to drive the manual yet, just the automatic.

Which transmission is better for you people who own a XFire?

Depends on your preference. I have the auto-stick and for autocrossing it's awesome. But, that's just my choice. I'm quite sure that the 6 speed folks think just as highly of the manuals and they too are right. You have to decide that one for yourself in the end. You are the one that will be living with it..... Which ever you pick you will love it.

I drive mine every day in rush hour traffic. I've done that in a manual in the past, no way I'd do it again.

I live in Central Texas. Which I rarley ever see rush hour traffic. I drive 20 miles 1 way to work (I'm an EMT on an Ambulance Service).

Is the 6speed a tough gearbox to drive? I test drove an Rx8 here a week ago and it had a smooth 6speed.

Anyone ever had problem with the 6speed on the xfire?

As a matter of principle I would never buy a car like the Crossfire with an automatic..... I just don't see the point. Just my personal bias, when I think sporty driver I think active driving and that means manual transmission.

That's cool. I do that too, but for free...

There have been many issues with the Manual, though all should be resolved with recent builds. Use the search tool here, you'll find lots of posts about it.

Well, I tried the 6-speed for about 45 minutes and did not care for the long throw of the clutch or the shift linkage. Say what you will, but all manuals should be as good as those in my last BMW, e.g. short, effortless and precise - an area that has never been one of Mercedes' strengths.

I went back to the dealer and tried the automatic and fell in love. The adaptive feature is a delight as mine has settled into a pattern of nice, crisp upshifts and the "sport-stick" shifting is totally entertaining.

It's absolutely a matter of preference! I'm with Crusty, no way an automatic in such a fun car. I live in the big city, but do not mind the times I get stuck in traffic. 6 speed only way to go!

Using the auto stick part of the automatic is no different then putting a regular automatic in to 3, 2 or L. It is not a tiptronic and will still shift on you.

They manual clutch was a little clunky for the first thousand miles or so but is smoother now (had a friend drive it when I got it and again more recently and that was his comment).

Personally I drove both and like how the rear end of the car would get all over the place in the manual so I bought it. Yes, mine is a daily driver and I live in austin traffic but I have yet to own a sports car with an automatic transmission.

Try them both and see which fits your lifestyle best...

I haven't driven either yet. But unless something completely turns me off with the 6 speed, that's the way I'm going.
I agree with Marc on the Autostick. I have it in my Sebring and it is just like using 1,2,3 rather than D. If I'm going with the sports car, I'm going all the way. I used to drive in Boston traffic every day with my old 5 speed Blazer and I didn't mind so it shouldn't be an issue since I seldom drive in a lot of traffic now.
But it is a matter of personal preference.

It truly is a matter of preference, but come on, this car is made to be a manual. Now, if you purchased this car as your everyday back and forth, perhaps the auto is the logical option-but really, this car is meant to be manual-i mean after all, you buy it to have fun!!!!!

It's the blonde vs. brunette thing. They're both good, but you gotta like one just a touch more than the other!

My sig says which way I lean.
PS I was blondes all the way, but now????
Just goes to show we can all change our minds.

I stopped at my dealer yesterday and drove a 6speed coupe. He warned me that 1st and 2nd would be a little tricky, but no trouble with the others. He was exactly right. I had to stop for a traffic light and stalled. It took a few seconds to figure out how to start it again. Saw a half dozen unhappy motorists behind me, and the light red again. All was ok until I returned to the dealer and had to take a left turn across traffic - stalled again. But I liked it and am going for the 6 speed. I have to choose color. He has a red roadster coming in in a couple of weeks for another customer (who has a coupe as well). If I like the color I'll place my order and jump into the system and wait the x weeks until it comes in.

You'll get used to it. First *is* a little tricky, but you get used to it.

You made thr right choice. Now, about that color...

1. You have to turn the key all the way off to turn it on again - it is to prevent you from trying to start it when the car is already on

2. In total I have had 4 out of 6 people stall my car that I have let drive it so don't feel bad. Some of them even drive a manual. The funnest one is when I tried to teach a friends wife how to drive a standard how to drive a manual with my car. We restarted at least 20 times and there where only 4 stop signs on the route we took.

Wow!!! ... an SRT and you're passing up the chance to be the first to do a Hook-Up??? East Coasters had the first roadster, you would be the first SRT to do a Hook-Up!!! Does this mean you will have 2 XF's - or are you selling the first one?
