Does this happen when you're at a stop? If so, it's normal. The wipers automatically go into intermittent mode when the vehicle isn't moving.

they shut off at all times.....first time in heavy downpour while car in motion....most times after car has stopped and then started moving again. i've read when batteries are old they can cause funny things to happen,,,,think that's the problem?

Sounds more like a bad connection where water is getting in somewhere and shorting them out. I would try spraying the front of the car with a hose or maybe taking it through a car wash and getting it good and wet and see if it happens. If so, then the wiring needs to be checked.

Where abouts in the cycle do they stop? In the park position or any random spot. The position they stop is an important indicator of the cause of the problem.

The Service Manual describes a list of the tests that can be done to check the operation of the wiper motor, switch, wiring and the BCM for faults. Check the ground and fuse connections first, probably not them but they are easy to check.
