The first change should always be done sooner since it's good to get fresh fluid after the initial breakin. After that, I usually change it every 30k miles with a really good synthetic lubricant.

Seconded on the fluid recommendations! I want to change out all fluids in my XFire soon.

Royal Purple is great but lasts ~20K before you start getting synchro slip

RedLine MTL... hands-down. It was what I was going to put in mine before the other driver upgraded my ride lol...

http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=45&pcid=7

We used RedLine exclusively here at Nissan Motorsports, and it survives rdiculous amounts of abuse on the track.

You can order it at any O'Reily Auto Parts store... Two quarts should be more than plenty, I think factory fill is ~1.3 Qt (thereabouts). Shouldn't be more than $40 with tax

Thanks Jon, had been doing some reading on redline and liked what I saw. Thanks for the info, I think I will go in that direction.

In the last car I just used OEM fluid and it did the job, but I am hoping for a little smoother tranny after the swap this time around...

Red Line Synthetic Oil - Gear Oil for Manual Transmissions - MTL 75W80 GL-4 Gear Oil

Jon, which redline ATF would you use for the automatic? Do you like it better than AMSoil?

Also, I'm thinking to do a proper oil change you would need to drop the pan and replace the filter then flush the system on one of the machines. How much fluid would that take?

I can search around on MBWorld if you'd like, and see what they recommend... As far as the 722 transmission is concerned, I would probably stick with the OEM fluid. The manual gearbox had a bit more flexibility, but the auto is a complex animal.

32Krazy! has done this service on a couple of the AMG/SRT models... Anthony (grip-grip) has as well. I would have to ask one of them, they did a simple drain/refill IIRC...

Rudy says that using anything other than the recommended Mercedes approved fluid is asking for trouble.

Forget the mileage factor.
Change it when you tire of the clunky shift. JHM2K has the answer. Red Line Synthetic.

I thought the lube of choice in the 6 speeds was 5W20 Mobile 1.

Why doesn't Redline MTL not show an application for the Crossfire or Mercedes?

I would agree 100% in the auto trans... Many on MB-World have used the Redline in the SLK with 6-speed and noticed an improvement in shifting.

Did you actually end up going with this? What are your thoughts, if so?

Very well could be... my old car was totaled before I got a chance to try it.

Likely because the number of Crossfire/Mercedes owners using their product is very low. That, and the owner's manual in the Crossfire says the manual box is "maintenance free" regarding fluids.

Fun Fact -- the manual transmission in our car is sourced from GM, if I recall correctly. I'll have to research that last bit

I have used the mobile 1 in both of mine and noticed an improved shift and better feel. I have been running it for over 30K in the graphite and mostly it goes out to the track and the Dragon and it still feels good.

I love the other 'premium' fluids, just figured I would use the tried and true and have been happy.

Edit: I bought the graphite with under 30K and did it as soon as I bought it and it still felt much better. Don't wait on mileage, change it now and enjoy the better feel...

For clarification, my quote referenced here was talking about the NAG1 auto box, not the manual box.
Fill to level of fill plug anyway.

So, is the 5W20 Mobile 1 the correct spec for the manual trans?

The shop that I talked to yesterday said the same thing, use the Mercedes fluid for the auto. He wouldn't do it with redline. I'm not at 40k yet so I'll get it done this summer. Thanks

Spec is for any 5w-20 syn engine oil. I've got Mobil 1 EP in mine now with good results.
