Default bas/esp light

out and about today and noticed the bas/esp light had come on tried the steering to the left right and centre trick no joy but after i had stopped and started 4 or 5 times on my journey it went out so will wait and see if it returns...after doing a search on the forum seems most likely a wheel speed sensor or brake light switch....correct ?...thanks....chris....

Let us know what you find.. I have brake lights and replaced all 4 with "known" good sensors. Still have the issue.

Mine comes on occasionally too. Don't know what causes it but it's never thrown a code because they don't pick up anything when I bring the car in for inspection. When I shut the car off and restart it goes away. I get it maybe once every two or three months and I have 72,000+ miles on the car.

Ever since I replaced the original battery in my 04 last year, I have not had all the freaky lights , like ESP/BAS going off and on, wing going up on start, etc. Check the battery.

Didn't want to go there myself.. but planning on checking mine for 12volts this weekend.. not sure if "less" will still start the car and carry on or not.. but I did read initial turn of the key the BAS/ESP system is looking for 12volts to initialize and operate.

After 2 hours of being home following a 40 minute drive home.. 12.8 volts - turned on ignition switch with stereo on.. 12.25 volts. So sounds like I can check that off my list.

Might not be the battery, but probably is a voltage thing. I would do the simple thing first. Check all connections especially fuses. Sounds dumb, but just a little resistance can cause this. From time to time, I just pull the spaded fuses and put them back in, and just look around the engine compartment and modules for corrosion or loose connections

In fact, today, I am buying regular batteries for both cars today. I will keep the little batteries on life support for race days. I no longer trust them on long trips anymore. I don't drive the cars enough to keep charged properly. Even with that, I haven't had any real problems.

Let me tell you a little story. I picked up my car new in July of 09. I got it home and gave her a good wash. As I was drying out the underside of the hood and radiator bulkhead, I noticed a little water on my drivers side fuze center. I went to dry it off and the whole cover moved. I lifted it up and saw a whole lot of water inside the fuzes and stuff. I took the sub-cover off and there was water everywhere. I took everything out and totally dried out all I could reach, then put all the fuzes and relays back in place. I ran the car with full heat and A/C (the box is vented from the cabin to keep it cooler than the engine compartment) and I let it totally dry out. I made sure it was all completely dried out and then placed the cover back on. Thats when I noticed the cover locks into the rear first then the front snaps in place. Ever since then I make sure no water gets in there and check it after I dry out the engine area the best I can. I have never seen another drop of water inside there but can only wonder how many times the car was washed at the dealership before I bought it with that cover misplaced. People, check and make sure your electrical covers arer properly placed, so that no water can get down where it doesn't belong.

Just put in a new relay control module in my '04 coupe. It cleared the P0410 fault code (air injection system) but now the BAS/ESP lamp is on. I disconnected the battery to install the RCM, so that may indicate the BAS/ESP lamp activation is somehow related to voltage. Haven't driven the car yet to see what happens. My battery is relatively new and checks out fine. It's also maintained on a Battery Tender due to infrequent driving. All these advanced electronic systems can by annoying.

Crymar, Try turning full left and full right and then back to center with engine running. This should reset the BAS/ESP.

should the engine be running? ... the book says key in the on position ... I have an 05 roadster limited edition and have been having trouble with the BAS/ESP light too ... I've tried the wheel turning routine but light is on after a few miles ... I've been reading the forum and have learned a lot ... just read about the fuse box cover and sure enough the cover was on wrong ... I pulled the ESP and BAS fuses and put some silicone dielectric grease on them even though they didn't look that bad ... maybe that will fix the problem ... don't know ... other things I've done are
1) check tire pressure
2) check battery voltage
3) check for corrosion on battery terminals
4) read everything I could get my hands on

I'm not too excited about going to a dealership ... too much $ ... would rather try to fix it myself ... if the light comes back on then I'll go the next level looking at the brake paddle switch and if needed get a diagnostic code reader for the car ... any suggestions on what reader to get?

Well, I have to take my car in for the BAS light too. Still have a few months left on the extended warranty so I figure it'll be just $100 for the deductible.

Kill 2 birds with one stone : get the UltraGuage - it does code readout AND displays 18 of the selectable ODBC parameters like speed, RPM, avg MPG, IAT etc etc.
$69.99 + about $8 shipping.

http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/index.htm

( not affialiated, but I have one and LOVE it !! )

If it helps, I disconnected the negative terminal on my battery yesterday to change out the camshaft sensor. I left the headlight switch in the cab on to drain any stray voltage.

On startup, after putting everything back together, had a BAS/ESP light on for the first time, as well as the tire pressure indicator (which has been on since i got the car in april). BAS/ESP went away as I was going around the block and I haven't seen it since.

I used to get the bas/esp light on occasionally, then I disconnected the battery and on reconnect the light came on so I did the steering thing left to right to centre and it went out and has never come on since. Just try disconnecting the battery and resetting the sensor, it worked for me and that was a few months ago.

I have had the light on since I got mine a month ago. New battery, pulled and reinstalled fuses, checked RCM for solder fix, tried the steering lock to lock thing and replaced brake switch, have new tires and brakes are good as well as alignment. I guess maybe a speed sensor but I gave up.
