You have known of my devotion to my car for over a year now so here goes. I was driving in the rain and suddenly the car was in 2 feet of water and it died in a split second. We pushed it onto dryer land and nothing worked. The AAA tried to start it to no avail and could not pull it on to the flat bed as the part to tow it was never put into the boot. So the truck came around and pulled it on to the truck from the rear.
The dealer was as shocked as was I. The decision is that the vapor lock ruined the motor. The new one costs $16,000 plus labor.
Who knows what other damage will be found. Just be very careful about water so you do not have this horrific story to tell. I'll keep you posted.

Almost the same thing happened here in August 2003. We were lucky - CEE BEE was in the shop that day so we had a loaner car when we got stuck in a couple of feet of water in our flash flood here.
But..........a guy that had bought a XF at the same dealership we did had to have his towed in after it got caught in water. They had to total his - it was a couple weeks old when that happened!!
I cringe when it rains here - because it does not rain often - but when it rains - it floods!!!

Good Luck with your drowned XF. That is a very sad story. I hope the insurance company will take care of it for you. Be sure to keep us posted.

It rains so little here that I never drive my good car in the rain because people don't drive very safely.They seem to drive faster than they can stop on wet pavement.

Sad story, and I hope your insurance does you right. It's just for situations like this that I decided to fork over $295 for gap insurance when I bought FDXFIRED. I was massive upside down in previous vehicle, and will be massive upside down in FDXFIRED for prolly another couple years. :cry:

 

In October 2000, I got caught in a flood in my Voyager. I was basically floating until some kind security guard waded out and push me back on land. Completely hydro-locked the engine, bent the con-rods etc.

Cost the insurance company �’2500 and me �’150 excess.

Am wary of puddles now.

 

It could be because the fuel filter is only encased with a plastic box close to the exhaust area on the passenger side. My redneck muffler guys was the one that noticed it and gave it a big laugh.

 

It is now Sept 11. Got a call from the insurance company. All the rods were bent and the camshaft was damaged. They are totalling the car!!!!!
This is really hard to believe. I will wait for the final answer and I guess order a 2005 model. What an unbelievable and weird experience. Thanks for your responses.

I doubt the fuel filter is just plastic. I'm sure its made of metal and metal AN fittings. When you are dealing with pressurized fuel lines, you can't mess around with a plastic box.

Maybe he was laughing because it could heat it up faster. Perhaps the plastic box has a heat shield lining inside of it to deflect heat from the fuel filter. Not good to heat up fuel before it reaches the motor.

Hi tdancer - By watching TV reports, that doesn't look like a very nice place to be right now. Hope you are well and that you, your Xfire and your property and family have all escaped unharmed.

 

I guess the Crossfire won't compete with a Hummer in fording streams. I'll take the wife's monster truck if we ever experience flooding in this area.

I can't believe they are totalling the car from an Insurance perspective. As I mentioned above, it cost �’2,500 to repair my Voyager V6 engine when it got hydrolocked.

I would have thought they could source an MB engine and keep the rest of the car?

You should buy the car off the insurance company and get it fixed yourself.

 

Well there is an ending to all this. Just picked up my new Crossfire. Got Graphite as the Black car was impossible to keep clean. Looks like the insurance, gap insurance, etc will cover it. Cost me for the rental car, the deductable and the AAA towing to dealer. Hope Chrysler will pay for the tow. Car is perfect and seems tighter to me on the road. I may never use water again! Thanks for all the support and information. Did not get the SRT6 as the fixed spoiler really detracts from the magnificent sculpturing of the car.

My wife's insurance policy will automatically give her a new car if she has an accident within the first 12 months of ownership. Might change mine over when I next get a new car.
