Yeah Zip, I raced there in 1964, and again in 1965.
Actually, I "crashed and burned" almost exactly where my Crossfire is parked in the photo. Ironically, my Derby wound up in the same position as well.
I had the middle lane in the race, when we crossed the finish line I looked out of the corner of my eye and noticed the car's wheel on my right was lined up with my steering wheel (so I knew I had won the race. (The guy in the left lane was several car lengths behind.
Right then I sat straight up, and the wind resistance immediately started to slow me down, while the car on my right pulled ahead because he stayed tucked down low (even though the race was over).
I turned to look over my left shoulder to see where the #3 car was at, and when I looked forward I saw the car on my right had his brake locked up and was sliding into my lane.
He hit me dead center, and pushed my car sideways. We were probably doing 15 to 20 mph at that moment. Then as luck would have it, (you can see where the smooth pavement meets the not-so-smooth pavement in the photo) there was a little ridge there, and it sent my car up in the air about a foot or so.
Everbody thought my car was going to roll over, but it didn't. It just came down sideways hard, and bent my axles. Thene to add insult to injury, the #3 car plowed into me, (even though he had enough room and time to steer around my car.
The officials said it was a photo finish, (but nobody ever saw the photo) usually they would always hang the photos on a bill board so everybody could see them. They took my car top side and tried to straighten my axles as best they could, and they put 3 new wheels on my car. My opponets car wasn't damaged, and he only bent one wheel. (Before racing, everybody usually spends hours spinning their wheels to break them in).
Anyway, on our rematch, the guy who crashed into me beat me by about a foot or two.
I went back the next year, and lost my 1st. race.
I just realized, that was 49 years ago! Ahh...good times.lol
