Default OEM Trunk cover

The supply of oem trunk covers seems to have dried up. I can't even find any on eBay. Does anyone have one for sale? Does anyone have any idea of what you'd have to pay if one came up for sale?

I have a spare one and I want to know a fair price for it. It is missing the hooks and the hidden straps that the hooks screw into. But I'll make them and they will be OK. I'll make them sometime in a month or so.
Beaner has one still unpacked in the box and it is his retirement fund.

I also have an OEM car cover for the Limited coupe. It's in the bag and in great condition, it was used inside the garage and never outside. I have no use for it now that I have the SRT cover.

Both items will be for sale at some time. Stay tuned and watch the For Sale listings.

onehundred80,

You think the hooks can be made without a example?

Cause i think mine will only come with the bracket and the Cover. if i have to believe the picture:

Let me know when u start making the hooks, i gladly pay u for it if u can make 2 of both.

I have another cover that is complete installed on my car. I'll be using that as an example to copy.

You will also need the adapters that screw into the bulkhead and the two cover frame mounting screws that screw into the bulkhead adapter.

The bulkhead is tapped M16x1.5 thread, 5/8-18 could be used instead though I guess. The button head screws that screw into the bulkhead adapter are 12mm again 1/2-13 or 1/2-20 could be used. I'll be making the adapters as well. The OEM adapters are use to cut the thread in the bulkhead, this could be done but a tap would be easier to do than make the adapter a thread cutting tool as well.

I plan on making the adapters out of socket head cap screws, which will have to be drilled and threaded inside, the head is about the correct height and drilling and tapping the thread inside should not be too hard. I may have to anneal the bolt to make it easier.

The cover can be installed using the OEM instructions (click) available for down load on this site.

You need the stand off which the socket head cap screw provides or you'll need to add a spacer over each insert. If you do not have a stand off you will crush the carpet and it would look bad if you removed the cover mounting frame.

Can anyone make a simple drawing of the brackets.. how big they are, and where and how big the holes are.

I mean the brackets that are bolted on the rear lightings, and the hooks that keep the screen in place.

Thanks in advance !!!

I made the drawings a long time ago and they are here somewhere.

I had to search them out in my files and re-post them here. Adapter, hooks and straps added to this post.
They are a left hand and a right handed parts, except the adapter.

I take it you have the instructions of how to install the cover. I have included that here as well.
Click here (modified for direct download)

The adapters could be made without the self tapping feature, in that case the two holes in the rear of the bulkhead could be tapped M16-1,5 (or 5/8-18 UNF) and the adapters just screwed in. This is probably the best idea. It is best to use the finer thread pitch as the sheet metal of the bulkhead is not too thick.
M12 (1/2-13 UNC) is the inside thread.

I think that the adapters could be made from M16-1,5 or 5/8-18 UNF socket cap screws of a suitable length and the inside threads added by drilling and tapping. It may save some work, I am not too sure if they would have to be annealed to make the tapping easier, industrial quality tools should do it OK without this step. No big deal anyway. The heads of the cap screws may be a bit short, but a washers should add the extra height.

Thanks allot onehundred80 Drawings are perfect. (I just need to convert them to Centimeters)

I'll make correct drawings with Acad and hand them over to my previous school.
Maybe the teacher can make it an assignment for the students and i can pick out the best once's
If my lazy approach doesn't work, i can make them myself.

The nut/adapter can be made on the turning lathe, but i'll try some existing adapters first.
I added a photo of one that i think will work.

Again thank for the effort!!

Thx thats helpfull,

Only question that remains is when i drill the holes of 24mm in the back, how does that fit M16 threat. I'm curious whats behind it when i drill the 24mm hole. I'll drill 10mm first i think to check things out.

You have got a bit confused, the 24mm hole goes through the carpet only. I used 22mm and it was tighter on the adapter, you do not want a hole that is too big showing under the mounting bracket. The holes for the adapter are already in place, they are in small wells that takes up some of the depth of the adapter head.

I marked the position of the hole like they describe and pushed a sharp scriber through the carpet to find the extent of the hole and thus find the true center of the hole in the bulkhead. I thought their method was a bit vague.

The adapter or a tap is then screwed into the hole in the bulkhead rear wall cutting the thread as it goes.

I added a photo that shows the holes in the rear face of the bulkhead, the picture was taken at Karmann during assembly of the car.

You can see three holes in the top of the bulkhead, you'll be using the one on the left and the matching one on the right that you cannot see. You can see that the holes are in wells below the main face of the bulkhead.

Aaaah great just like i hoped it would be.

I'll just use a thread cutter M16 so i can use my adapter, then i fit a M12 spacer/connector to cover the space between the bulkhead and carpet.

I'll make some photo's when i install it on probably sunday, will be making the brackets later on.

And thx again!!
