Default Windshield Pitting..

Was driving down to Virginia Beach on Friday in glorious sunshine but was having a hard time seeing because of the unbelievable pitting in the windshield, I had the car cleaned before i left so the glass was clean but the pitting was unreal. Anyone else noticed this or seen this on their xfire?

I guess my mileage 30K would certainly contribute to this and allot of my driving has been highway, but I have 75k on my passatt on the same route and that thing has hardly a mark on it.

Anyone know if this is covered under warranty off hand, had experiences with windshield pitting before or had this kind of work repaired? id be interested to hear.

Thanks

no warranty...just soft glass...less costly to produce. chrysler will call it normal wear.

Does anybody know if there is a way to slow the effects of pitting. It would be nice if there was a transparent coating or film that could be applied to the window to protect it.

there actually is....there is a company who provides clear film for nascar windshields. it protects the windshield from debris and they change the film regularly for a like new screen.

some info i found on net....

- Pro-tint introduced its tear-away film to race teams in 1997, after NASCAR officials required a switch to Lexan windshields rather than stock glass to protect drivers from flying debris.

- Army borrows from NASCAR on helicopter windshields - ... And to maintain a clear view through the windshield, the engineers determined that only one layer of film could be installed on helicopters at a time, instead ...

complete article....

Got the same problem with my X- fire as well after 19,000 miles. I have to agree with Andrew very soft glass. I had a 96' Jeep Grand Cherokee that I used to take on the same route to work everyday. At anywhere from 50,000 to 55,000 miles the windshield started to pit.

"Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time,
The green light flashes, the flags go up,
Turning and burning, they urn for the cup,"

after getting a small stone chip in my windshield i decided to minimize my trips with the crossfire on the interstates. i either take state highways on my commute or drive my "beater" 04 Alero.

some of the pitting of the windshield may be caused because the car is fairly low to the ground. i also noticed that the windshield is more upright than in some other vehicles which exposes it to more direct hits vs. glancing strikes.

Maybe glass polish would help.
