Default Cig lighter DOA ! Steps to finding power? 1 2 3 ?

So many issues have been resolved on the New to Me 2005 Limited Coupe and I am loving the car and think I will keep this ole girl for awhile. One of the last issues I am facing is a dead cig lighter, checked the fuse so moving forward someone had mentioned I can remove the passengers side kick panel and will be able to see if its still plugged in, if it was up to me I would replace it with a dual usb socket instead but sadly some things still need power from a socket plus it keeps the car stock looking. I see a single plastic screw over the vent on the panel but is there anything else attaching it? are the cig lighter units prone to going bad ? What would be my next step if I see it is plugged in to get it up and running again? thanks for all the help, GREAT forum. I did do a search on " cig lighter" and did not find anything .

YOu should be downloading the service manual. I cant open it on THIS POS computer, but I think that is explained in the "body" section of the service manual (over 3000 pages - and the index is horrible). Start here:
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ollection.html

If the glove box light works, the fuse is OK. They are on together, but are on ignition power, I modded mine to be hot all the time.

I did see that mod and will tackle it after I get the lighter up and going. I am sitting down to review it now since I just came in from messing with that car again. I did get overwhelmed when I was reading about the SRS issue but the removing of a panel should go well. Have a good eve.

You say the ciggy lighter is dead, do you mean there is no power at the contacts inside the socket or that something plugged into the socket does not work?
If it is the latter then the contacts may be bent and not be touching.
If I recall correctly there is a screw on the vent and a quick release fastener on the scuff panel, I should remember really as I had it apart earlier this year and times before that.🤔
The plug that attaches to the lighter slides on sideways, so do not pull on it.

I should of been clear, it seems like I have no power to it , I have tried a few different things plugged in and nothing. I am going to check it now with a test light.

Yes . . Houston, we have power. What I found is the shiny clip that is inside had fallen off, I believe it snaps in horizonal but I have power in the center. Next question is this, should there be a spring or anything that goes under the chrome tab? First time inside a lighter.

The connector slides in from the side and fits the three pins shown in the photo. Not the best but the three pins are at the top in the photo.

I am not sure what you mean.
The lighter socket aligns with the flat on the side and just snaps in.
The power plug just pushes into the T socket.

All the back of the lighter is fine. what i am talking about is the front side now. When i put a test light in the hole where your cell phone charger plugs into I had power in the bottom , dead center on a center brass circle. BUT I found a shiny metal piece that was about to get lost. I have never looked inside a cig lighter before, i just slam chargers, etc in them and expect them to work. question is this, is there anything under this shiny tab that touches the brass center? A spring or something or do you know? Thanks for the help, the XF future in our home is looking brighter.

Please will someone send me a pic of the female part of our cig lighter or the parts breakdown so I can get mine working. I have power on the center brass ring in the very bottom of the lighter and I found the silver piece that snaps in but I think i am missing something that sits IN the brass ring . I cant get any of my plugs to power up. I have put the silver piece in and taken it out. Help . . AT least it does have power.

The positive pole is the U shaped silver piece that lays at the bottom of the socket and it is held in place with a brass rivet. The negative pole is the thin tube that makes up the rest of the socket and extends to very nearly the top of the socket, the black plastic tube surrounding the thin silver tube at the top of the socket has the snaps on it that hold it in the bezel.
One side of the positive pole can be seen on the left-hand side of the socket in the photo, it looks like a clip, it sits in a cut-out in the silver tube. The silver tube which looks white in the picture is the negative (ground) pole, it has two clips on it as well and one can be seen in a cutout just above the black plastic at the front.
Sorry for the poor photo, my other camera that does really good close-ups has a flat battery.

So I checked the brass rivet in the bottom of the lighter with a test light and had power with the key on of course. ..BUT that brass rivet looks like it is missing something because I have to put my probe a few mm into the rivet to get the power. I also have a silver piece with a rivet in the middle of it that had fallen out of its spot which I assume to goes in horizontally and I snapped it back into place from some utube video I watched. BUT the brass circle on the shiny clip is not touching the center brass and let me tell you, I pushed and wiggled my Valinetine detectors power plug and got nothing. I even took the shiny tab out in hopes that it would work. If I could buy a new one for 20 bucks , I would jump all over it. It seems like the entire lighter is loose and sorta wants to come out. I look inside the hole of my F-150 lighter and it does not look like ours at all. As far as power source goes I bought a 3 wide cig outlet that I was thinking about hard wiring and placing in the large glove box just to have it.

The way I wired in my Garmin (Valentine would be the same ) is to get one of those female lighter sockets with wire attached and wire it into the glove box light.
I then was then able to route the power cord across the dash at the windshield where you can't see it, then into the right side of the dash to the female socket.

Same thing for me when I bought the car. I removed the socket, drilled what was left of the rivet and put a small bolt with nut in the place of the rivet. It works..
As for accessory power, I removed the radio and tapped into the power back there; feeding new wires down through the console. That works too.

So I AM missing something in the brass center part! I was thinking about doing the same, if I can get a screw or bolt in the center it will make contact with the shiny tab and i will have power.

Seeing that photo I just have to charge up my camera that can do real close ups.
I am ashamed of my earlier photo.
