Default brake dust

I am getting alot of brake dust on my wheels. Is this a common issue? Does someone make a ceramic pad for these cars? Also my car came with all season tires I thought it was supposed to come with a performance tire instead of Continental.

The brake dust is common. The tires that are standard are a performance tire, I believe mine are Continentals. The All Season tire is a $175 or $185 option, they too may be Continentals, I don't know.

Replace the pads with Rotex Gold!
Available through www.brakeworld.com also Brembo rotors!
Do a search, this has been brought up several times before. There is also a pictorial thread on how to replace them! Very easy!
I have the Conti's and love them!

Brake dust sux! But until I feel like replacing my pads, Armor all Tire Cleaner is awesome! Spray it on, let it soak, and spray it off and the brake dust melts away with it. Its the only spray I've tried that actually works like its supposed to.

Cool Re: brake dust

Get the Rotex pads they are definitely worth the effort and cost, the stock pads are not the greatest (IMHO). The brake dust will eventually erode the clear coat on your wheels and then attack the paint. If you use ANY TYPE of wheel cleaner...REMOVE your center caps and clean them with soap and water, there have been reports of various wheel cleaners destroying the center caps. The Conti ASP tires are a $185.00 upgrade and (IMHO) are better than the Mushilen...I mean Michelin performance tires.

Actually, the Continental tires are an "option", not really an "upgrade". They were provided as an option only to better market the Crossfire in areas where there is snow or ice. The fact is that Chrysler charged $185 for this "option" when in reality the "standard equipment" Michelin PS2 retails for significantly more then the all season Contis. So you are actually paying more for less with the option even though the Contis may be far more practical for some drivers.

The Michelin tires are, without question, superior to the Contis in dry conditions and in the rain. However, the Continental tires on the Crossfire still perform beyond the limits of which most drivers will venture.

I have to agree with Rob M, that the Continental All-Season tires offer more grip that just about anyone is going to need on the street. That's a generous patch of speed-rated rubber. On the track, it could be a different story... I would consider finding some lighter wheels if I took my crossfire racing. I remember reading somewhere that the combined weight of wheel and tire was something ridiculous like 54 lbs. That's a lot of unsprung weight. Thank heavy, large, big-spoke wheels for that and run flat tires.

Brakes - just a caution that ceramic pads may cut down on dust, but they may also accelerate rotor wear. I don't know about you, but I would rather wipe off a bit of dust once or twice a week, rather than turn or replace rotors early. But yes, I agree that brake dust on these cars is ridiculous. Oh well. Just another excuse to wash it, right?

It cost a few bucks, but changing the pads is a good idea, it will save you a lot of time, as you don't have to clean the wheels every day. The dust is a real pain in the as*.

I really don't like the continentals when you go into a sharp corner they will start slipping I cant believe it was an option. I can tell that it is the tires that is restricting my corners. What type of tires do you use? I didn't know that brake dust eats the finish on rims. I am glad to know that. I am not too worried about rotor wear, I always replace the rotor when change pads. I am going to check out the pads from rotex thanks.

Actually the Rotex Gold pads are Kevlar, not ceramic and will not wear rotors more! I changed mine in the first weeks I owned my Crossfire and now have over 27k miles on the front only! I also put Brembo cross drilled rotors from Brakeworld too, as well as Stainless Steel brakelines. All 3 of these improved by brakes even more!

Last week, I ordered a pair of Rotex Gold front pads. They arrived yesterday and I installed them today. Much easier than I expected.

I sure hope they live up to the hype regarding less brake dust. The factory pads made trying to keep the front wheels clean a non-stop effort.

The rotex gold pads will put out a little less dust then the stock rear OEM pads. The rear are even easier to put on. Let us know how you like them.

Well, it's been 12 days since I put Rotex Golds on the fronts. 12 days without washing the car as well. And all I can say is....

WOW!! What a dramatic difference!!! As previously noted by others, I'd say the accumulation of brake dust is 10% of what it used to be. And as others have also noted, both fronts and rears now generate brake dust at an even pace, which is minimal for both.

This was money very well spent. I couldn't be happier with the result!

Another vote for the rotex gold pads. I bought a set on the reviews on the forum.
The wheels are way cleaner! It stops good too.

Does anyone think that maybe spraying some type of clear coat on the inside of the front wheels would make it easy to just wash the dust off with a water hose? I'm thinking about it.

If you're talking about after you change pads? Just wax the wheels really good before putting them back on.

Our Xfire wheels already have a layer of clear coat on the painted surface of the wheel. IMHO I would get the Rotex Gold pads at least for the front and call it even. They are worth the expense and effort, best thing that I purchased for my Roadster Limited to date.
