The one easy and cheap thing that I'd suggest to you is to get the Magnaflow #14220 stainless steel muffler. Its a universal fit, but fits our car just fine, many have gone this route and in our opinion, it sounds GREAT! I paid $109.00 for the muffler and another $60.00 for the install. I'm not sure about the amount of hp gain, but it sounds very good, about as close to a V8 as your going to get. Another option for you would be to have a custom true dual exhaust set up done using a dual in and dual out muffler. I also know that K&N makes filters for our cars and its with mixed reviews here about hp gain, so its up to you on that one. I'm leasing my car and thats why I didn't go with new K&N as the stock filters are good for 4/50K, so why change them out when the car will be turned way before I get to either interval. Good luck with your car and you really need to find a winding road to see what these cars are really all about!

you'll get more hp out of a K&N than you would out of a muffler. there are chips and intake airbox setups you can try. do a search --

I can't say for sure which would actually give you the greatest H.P. increase, better breathing intake, or a decrease in back pressure. I suppose it would probably depend on which "stock" system was the least effective to start with. Has anybody ever seen any "dyno" tests on either swap?
I know from drag racing my '69 AMX, that my 1/4 mile times never improved after I installed the functional 1970 hood scoop. But I never noticed any improvement after I installed the free flowing side pipes either.
I do know one thing, it sure "sounded" like it was going faster!
So unless you're actually going to race it, maybe the exhaust would supply the greatest "phycological" benefit, and the most satisfaction.
Of course the "chip" is without a doubt the best improvement you can make for real performance.
