You are three hours away - I lived 2 1/2 hours away for eight years and got a room for the entire weekend, did it not less than sixteen times.
Driving three hours one way to attend a Dragon? That means you leave home at 5am and get back home no earlier than 8pm, and that's if you spend NO time with us other than DRIVING all day."
One guy was going to stay in BRyson City (almost as bad as Cherokee), here was my advice to him:
You posted in the right place, but you are staying in the wrong place.
YOU are going to be driving some LONG days. I know the lodge is not the best, but to be part of social gathering, you really want to be on site in the evenings; you can't make the social connections if you are not there. And you will be with us only ONE day - is it really worth it to drive so far for ONE day? I mean, you are welcome but you can't get out of this meet what we intend if you are not going to be with us cept for the drive on Saturday.
This is as much a SOCIAL event as a DRIVING event - MOST of us go back more for the friends and people than the roads.
And dno't forget, we leave by 9am for all the major runs.
One last thought: I"m 62 and I generally DO NOT drive far after dark on THOSE roads. Too many wild animals, fallen trees, etc.
He read that and changed his mind. He won't regret it.
But you are gonna regret your plan.

We sure do want you to stay a night to be able to socialize and make some new friends
Hope something works out for you but please don't give up
This is one of the best annual events held every year for the Crossfire owners now since it began here in 2007

First time TOTD attenders. John & Tracey Bandy from Birmingham AL. Arriving sometime Friday (probably around lunch) and leaving late Saturday afternoon (after a run or two). We had planned to come to this event in 2014 and it fell through.
One question I have for the group is back in 2014 when we had planned to come to the TOTD we bought these Cobra Walkie Talkies with 16 mile range. Will these work or should we purchase something else? Really looking forward to meeting everyone.

My opinion (FWIW) is those 2-ways are adequate for communicating with others during runs. I've got a pair of Midland's with about the same range & have never had any issue hearing talk and/or responding during a run.

I did review PizzaGuy's PDF about radios and it appears as long as they are programmed right they "should" be OK. I am a "read the instructions" kind of guys so I plan to read up on the alert mode that he referred to. We will definitely attend the radio meeting on Friday night to test them. I think we will take a chance on them. If we experience issues hopefully we can borrow (or even buy) any spare radios available.

They are not very good but will work. The Motorola T100/T200 are about the only thing I endorse. I WISH they'd not discontinued the T100, it was THE radio for our use.

You read my radio tutorial, I"d ask you to read the description of the event as well. You seem to not understand Saturday's activities.
On Friday, by 9 or 10am, those who arrived Thursday evening will be gone on Friday runs, returning between 2pm and 5p. Starting around 3-4pm, the Friday arrivals will start rolling in, in great numbers, so feel free to wander the area until we get back.
As to Saturday, those runs are kinda long, we leave no later than 9am and get back around 4-6pm.
I'd ask you to reconsider your plans - you are going to drive 4 1/2 hours one way for............ what? If you head home Saturday, you will drive a total of 9 1/2 to 11 hours that day alone - does not sound like a vacation to me.
Keep in mind two things:
1) Time spent on the runs is not really "together" time, other than lunch time.
2) The dinners and evenings around the lodge are what make this a social event, where you make friends and become part of the group.
3) Even those who arrive Thursday and leave Monday will tell you (and I will tell you): "It went by too fast, I had way too little time with everyone..."
I've been running this event for eight years now, and no one EVER told me, "I spent too much time there", but Iv'e often heard, "We felt left out, disconnected, didn't know what was going on..."
This is a social event, where we talk about our cars, look at our cars, learn about our cars, make new life-long friends - and you don't do that driving in a group all day (as enjoyable as that is - be sure to take plenty of your own pictures!) Blowing in and leaving the next day will leave you asking yourself why you event drove up there - believe me, I've heard this over and over again.
You are the fourth attendee I've said this to: Do yourself and us a favor - reconsider your plans; extend your time with us.
AND if you have not made a reservation already, I don't think you can join us anyway, unless you stay in the campground, IF what I am hearing is true. I will call the lodge Monday to confirm if any rooms are available, but I'm told we are down to (expensive!) cabins.
I will add you to the list, but will wait to hear back on your reservation and arrival/departure dates.

Ok, got you two on the list. We have pretty good numbers, if all show up.
In related news, there have been a few cancellations (hard to tell, cause I remove the cancelled and add new ones in their place to make keeping count easier, but I may stop doing that).
In any event, it never hurts to call for a room, both we and other groups have last minute cancellations.
