Default OEM Oil Filter

Colleagues...I've read through so many posts now regarding Oil Changes and Oil Filters and think that I've put the following details together properly. I didn't want to get caught without when it is time to change oil, so I checked this site and several MB sites to validate that the proper MB number for our oil filter is 000-180-26-09. This translates to the extended life fleece oil filter. The old paper filter element is 000-180-22-09. They are obviously easy to confuse.

Further research led me to the MANN HU 718/5 X which is the aftermarket, German manufactured extended life fleece filter. This is the equivalent of 000-180-26-009.

I found these filters on EBAY in a pack of 4, listed as Mercedes C240 C280 C32 C230 C43 C500 oil filters. The price is $51.99 plus $8.50 shipping and handling...$60.49.

I hope that this is a good price, but I haven't had much luck searching on the MANN part number alone.

The next step will be to buy the Mobil-1 oil, but I don't anticipate any problem with that. I aim to avoid the oil changing woes that so many of you have warned about Wish me luck.

Sounds like a good plan, I bought the last 2 filters from my dealer's parts dept. Do it yourself for sure, it seems hard for the dealer to screw up, but they did with mine, they put in all 9 quarts instead of 8.5!!

Let me add one detail (or ask about one)... I hear about Mobil 1 0w-40 oil... that's a synthetic right? Or is there a synthetic and non-synthetic 0W-40?

I'm guessing the way to go is synthetic 0W-40 and the fleece filter... will be calling about the filter from my local shop today.

Just called my local shop... he didn't have any 000-180-26-09 filters... he said that the filter has been superseded with a 000-180-31-09. The price on this filter is $19.50.

On a positive note, he sounded knowledgeable and knew about the proper oil volume and recommended Mobile 1 0W-40 Synthetic before I mentioned it. So, maybe my local shop isn't a bunch of Retards.

So, anyone know about this new filter? He said it seemed like a paper filter.

According to this link in eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MERCE...QQcmdZViewItem
The 000-180-31-09 is a Fleece filter. And this guy seems to sell a lot of MB parts so he likely knows what he's selling.

Great... that's what I wanted to know... and thanks for the link... I went ahead and picked up the pack of 4. My local shop wanted $19.50 + tax each... so $58 for 4 is an awesome deal.

Now I just gotta get the oil (wal-mart?) and get the change done this weekend.

The only place I was able to find the Mobil-1 in 0W-40 was Advance Auto. Perhaps AutoZone and others have it as well. I've never found it in a non-auto store. They have 2 or 3, some 4 grades of Mobil-1, but no one stocked the 0W-40...at least not in my area. Also, Advance Auto had the oil on sale for under $5 per quart. Check it out! I'm still 1,000 miles from my Schedule A service...but I am so tempted to change my oil just to try out my vacuum oil remover.

When using the top-sider to extract the oil, does it get it all out? I mean could there be any residue or sludge left in the pan that would otherwise drain out with the help of gravity?

SRTSIX,
This was discussed in a thread a few days ago...I still feel that the oil extractor can't get all of the dirt from the bottom of the pan using a 1/4 inch tube, but others believe differently. I still like to do it the conventional way and use the drain plug.

Again, the best way to be sure is to test it yourself. There is no way that posts on a forum will convince the unconvinced. However, one member claimed to have sucked the oil out and then pulled the plug....and nothing came out...not a drop. For the ease and the cleanliness, and the support of a variety of MC boards, I'll use the sucker.

Does anyone else know why the 000-180-26-009 was replaced with the 000-180-31-009 filter? The last oil change I did, I bought the filter from MB and it was the fleece filter, but I'm wondering why there are 3 part numbers.

The dealer guy at my local shop said that each one supersedes the previous one... so they only carry the latest one. So that means they started with a paper one, replaced it with fleece one, then replaced with a different fleece one... each time increasing the price!

That's all I know.

Is 000-180-31-009 a Chrysler part number or a Mercedes part number? My local 5-Star dealer invoiced me as follows when they changed my oil in September:

FP Number - 5183748-AA
Description - Filter EN 9057006

Does anyone know which filter they used? They charged me $19.50 for the filter.

They also charged me $10.50 per quart for the oil but that is a different story. I will change my own oil in the future.

Greetings Crossfire Friends.

I bought Mobile 1 0W-40 today at Wall Mart for $6.52 per quart. Only the "Super Stores" carry it.

I got my filter from a MB dealer and they sold me a filter and game me the copper washer for free! I found out that the oil is hard to find, but I will buy it from Wal-Mart if I see it there.

I hear MB dealerships (and many others) use a topsider like oil suction setup when they change customers oil. I bought one, its fast, clean (if you don't screw up) and all without jacking/crawling under the car. Try it, the dealerships do it!

Sears sold me a "vaccum" for $44, it has a 8 quart capacity, the next larger size was just too big.

So 9 qt oil with tax $63
Vaccum $44 (reusable I hope)
Filter from Amazon $17

Beats $175 at the dealer

What wrench do I need to open the oild filter, anybody know, must be metric.

There is no wrench needed for the oil filter...it is under the large black plastic cap in the front of the engine on the left side. It just unscrews and the oil fillter is under this on a post attached to the cap. Be sure and change all of the o rings on the shaft when replacing the filter...
