Default Learned my lesson

Today, I started to leave my neighborhood and all of a sudden I lost my power steering and the battery light came on. I pulled over and noticed that my fan belt came off and there was a ##)& load of oil all over the front of my engine. The oil filter was leaking like mad. I took it back to the place where I got my oil changed.

They are in for it for a quart of oil and a new fan belt. They didn't have the tool to put the fan belt back on. Now my lovely car is at the local Chrysler dealer getting a new fan belt with the lovely customized tool to put in on. Cost: $65 to put the belt on and $71 for the new belt. Luckily the oil changing place is going to pay for all of this. Next time I WILL change my oil on the car. I'm so steamed!

Wow, that does really stink and sorry you had to go through all of this. It is so easy to change our own oil, especially with the filter up on top and I won't trust anyone else to do mine. Good luck with everything.

Sorry to hear about that Itsky. But you're not the first person that has happened to, and unfortunately, you won't be the last.
Installing the O-rings properly on the oil filters "bayonet", and making sure to "snug" the cap down is critical.

itsky,

There is a positive side to this; it didn't happen going to the Dragon! I feel for you and hope they get it back to you ASAP.

I sure hope they do a detail of the engine compartment. Sure they should pay for repairs but I really think they owe you a detail as well. I think we should get Franc on the case. Maybe the Roadster with a stick can do more damage with it than mashing the gears

Gods speed and stay safe...

Respectfully,

Paul (MisterTaz)

How can a fan belt come off by changing the oil?

When oil leaks all over it, it is much easier to fall off.

That blows. It seems the Chrysler dealer is the only place in town that will do mine. Even the local MB dealer won't touch it.

What are we going to do with you...first the tire issue at the dragon now this....

Seriously, if you can/want do it yourself then that is a better option. Locally I found a dealer that is friendly and inexpensive ($89 - compared to those that want $140) and they know what they are doing.

I know, I know. I should just keep her in the garage and not let her out to avoid these issues.

From personal experience I know the O-rings that come with the Purolator & STP filter kits are too thin & will leak!!! Now use Mann filters.

It was a Purolator filter. I bet you that was the issue... I got the filter with that oil deal from Advanced Auto (https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...d.php?t=32643). They probably used the same type of filter. I'm going to go and get a fleece one from Merc dealer.

Hey Itsky,

Sorry to hear about your issues with the oil filter.
I've looked at the Purolator oil filter, and the filter media itself says Mann on it.
I can't think that the filter itself is wrong, I think there must just be an issue either with the o-rings they choose to package with it, or something else.

BC.

Well that is what they told me anyway. I know on other vehicles that a socket would work to adjust the tensioner.

Itsky, sorry to hear about your troubles. There is a positive side, you didn't have the oil plug fall out and burn up the motor before you found it. I could have been much worse.
Looking forward to hooking up soon.

Problem was the top rubber ring was too small compared to OEM, oil leaked for top oil filter cap, same thing happened to me on my first oil change, I just wipe pulleys clean and installed same belt.
