Default Virgin, of sorts.

Here is my conundrm. When I purchased my '06 roadster last fall the dealer boasted that the car had never been driven in the rain. Although the car seemed to be all the dealer had described I brought her to my indie German mechanic. He was very re-assuring of the condition of the car. Said I should have many happy years and miles ahead and as I was driving off he said that it appears that it has never been driven in the rain. I hadn't mentioned the dealers comment to him.
I've been accused more than once of being a little obsessive compulsive and have not driven the car in the rain and even avoided an area of town where street cleaning was going on and drove five miles an hour on the wet street and got off the street at the first corner I came to.
I find that not driving in the rain makes car-keeping so much easier. Just a little dust to contend with.
My wife on the other hand reminded me that she was a virgin when we married and neither she nor myself agonised over that. Told her I can't remember that far back to which she shot back, "Why don't you two just get it over with and go play in the puddles".
What say you?

I say it is just a car. I don't usually take mine out in the rain, but I do get caught in the rain from time to time, like one entire weekend at the Dragon. If I worried about my car that much, I wouldn't have much fun with it. Nothing lasts forever. The next owner may appreciate it more, but who cares then...

I avoid it, only because black is ***** to keep clean...I am glad to own the aero blue coupe, as I can enjoy the rain again.....but, I won't just go drive it in the rain, I am usually caught out in it...right now they are both detailed, so I would hate to drive them in the rain, but it happens...

I take all my cars in the rain. I can do this with impunity for the entire underside, door cavities, bonnet and deck cavities are Waxoyled rendering the car impervious to the elements. This also covers the engine compartment. Exhaust systems are vunerable. I use it on my bikes too. easy to do. i'll take a picture of my Tiger'. it's on the hoist. proof is in the pudding. gary

excellent point!

Also just because she wasn't driven in the rain doesn't mean that she never got rained on. The dealer didn't care if that car got wet & you know it got detailed before origional delivery.

I hate to tell you this, but you took an industry slang term & ran with it. Don't take it too literally. "Its never been driven in the rain" is kind of like "No one ever sat in the seats" or "a retired school teacher owned the car" - they are just phrases to indicate the overall condition of the vehicle. Unless a rain meter has been attached to you car since date of assembly - you will never know. Plus, it snows a lot in the places where these cars were assembled.

Go play in the rain! Or at least don't worry about it if you do. Just worry about all the time you will have spend redetailing her....

I mix with oil paint thinner 50/50, then use a hand spray bottle to apply. the paint thinner evaporates and leaves a thin coat of wax. I use it on my leather seats and roadster fabric top. preserves them too. gary

When reading your earlier post about driving in the rain and that it didn't affect the car at all, I was definitely expecting you to be from somewhere in the South West, but I see that you are from SW Ohio - part of the good old rust belt! The underside of that car is pretty impressive for that area of the country.

I think I've seen this stuff before, and now I think I'm going to try it.

Have you ever used it on a car that has some rust/scale? My poor SRT6 is showing signs of rust/scaling on the suspension and other areas on the underbody.

EDIT: to original poster - if your car is that clean and you want to keep it pristine, then don't drive it in the rain. What's the point of driving a roadster in the rain anyway? LOL!

Jon

When I see surface rust I use Permatex rust treatment. An aerosol application to kill the rust, then the Waxoyl. I used it for many years, buy it at ACE. gary

I can attest to this... The GTR and 370Z built in Japan are test-driven after assembly, no matter the conditions outside. We simply give them a thorough wipe-down.

Your sense of humor is much appreciated. Must be a generational thing!

I second this, It won't be much fun if you're always worried about it. Reasonable precautions maybe. I drive mine when and where it suits me and if it gets dirty from time to time, it gets washed.

I try to avoid snow and rain as much as possible, but there are simply times that you get caught in the stuff. The car will live! I promise!

I avoid the snow when I can, especially with HID's and snow falling in the dark as they are truly blinding to the driver. With rain I don't worry too much unless it is a strong thunder storm with hail.
