Default Cover manual access?

Anybody ever make an access hole between the seat backs to get to the manual tonneau cover bolt?

I don't see how you would do that without drilling thru the gas tank!

So, what's going on? Why would you need to do that?

Makes sense now, I had thought the tank was lower than that.
Need to fix a couple leaks in the hydraulic system. With this Covid sh*^+ paychecks can be a little spotty.
Thinking I’ll just operate it manually for a bit.

I think you are forgetting how low the gas tank is.

ANYONE who is going to drill thru that bulkhead has better know EXACTLY where the tank is.

But again, I still dont understand what the OP was thinking, there is no use or need in drilling thru the bulkhead that I can see.

I have yet to try the long thin wrench, but it looks like a pita. Thought it might be easy to make a hole for a socket.

The system is designed for manual operation, it's easy. Drilling holes in the car is not going to help.

Mark, Dave and No704,

A picture is worth a thousand words. The gas tank appears low on that bulkhead. This pic is of a coupe but I'm sure the convertible is similar.

No704, just get the tool and practice a couple of times following Mark's video. Really nothing to gain drilling a hole through the bulkhead.

Regards,

Thanks for the replies, I’ll buy or make a wrench. Anybody have a preference on the strait vs angle head ?

There were two standard wrenches supplied with the car, one came with a straight 10mm opening and the other with an angled 10mm opening.
I have had them both. I could possibly dig out the Mercedes part number for each.

You are correct ( I think ) Mark.
I thought I had the straight version, but upon closer inspection I find I have the 45 deg angle version.
The part number is A2088990080

The best tool to have. It has the 6 mm Allen key fixed to it.

What I call the straight and angled tools, one or the other came with the car originally.
The 10 mm wrench end is not required om the coupe nor is the other end as it can be replaced by using a screwdriver.

I'm dumbfounded to learn that some/all cars came with both, after being a member here eleven years.

EDIT: I misread your post. And I went out and looked, the SE came with the bottom tool. My Limiteds, at least the Graphite, came with the upper tool.
Still learning after eleven years....................... (And I'm ten posts from 11,000!)

Neither of my roadsters came with a tool. The one I bought first was the one without the Allen head. The second had the Allen on it. I think the one with the Allen is best, if I needed a flat blade screwdriver I bet I could find one.

I am 300 posts from 24,000, lots of them inconsequential.
I could not find a wrench on my brand new 2004, so I asked the dealer for one, it was taken from another Crossfire. Some time later I found the original wrench in the pocket between the seats, so I had two. I gave one away to someone who never got one. I have never used it.
