Default Convertible window repair

I know the use on 3M primer and Window-Weld has been covered. Did this last year to one side of the glass with excellent results. The other side is now separating. I decided on another approach and wanted to see what y'all think.

As we know the issue is the separation of the adhesive from the canvas. Rather than scape all the adhesive, apply primer, and Window-Weld decided to apply E6000 to the existing urethane. The urethane was in good shape and E6000 will bond to canvas better. Should also bond well to the urethane. Took less time. Just cleaned up the surfaces with naptha, applied the glue, and secured with suctions clamps. After it set a bit removed the clamps, cleaned up with naptha and a razor for any E6000 that oozed out, and then reapplied clamps until fully cured. Was quicker by eliminating scraping off the old urethan. My concern was not cost. Wanted a solution to improving adhesion to the canvas.

Anyone else do this? If it works advantage is it should last longer and was quick. If not effective cleaning this off the top will be quite a task.

If anyone comes across this DO NOT USE E6000. Will not hold. As others have done 3m primer and Window Weld is only solution.

I did this once two years ago to drivers side vertical end. I did not apply primer to canvas and it has held great. Did same today on passenger side vertical edge which came loose.

Has anyone found applying primer to the canvas makes a difference? I would hate to have to do this again soon. The prep is a pain but important. Invariably I figure no matter what every few years will need to do this again.

Anyone have any experience to share? Mine is a garage queen with 48000 miles so still has factory glue other than the repairs I made.

I used the primer on both the glass and canvas. Stayed tight for me. James

Did both my vertical sides 6 weeks ago, still holding I did not scrape any of the old glue off unless it was loose but just applied the primer over it

Sorry to hijack, but does anybody know if the 3M primer is hydroscopic or has a time limit before the urethane is applied to it?

I left primer on for a day before window weld. No problem. Anyone have an idea for a solvent for window weld? I did not do as good job this last time. Acetone will work. Worried it will damage top. Naptha will work but same concern..Painters solvent did nothing.

Once it is dry really hard to remove and I needed Xanax after using a razor to remove most of it. It did try to make it less noticable by putting a little black spray paint on with a brush and that actually softened the window weld. It was cheap quick dry stuff and melted the red Solo cup i sprayed it in so I could brush it on so thinking acetone was the solvent.

The shop doing the replacement does custom and stock interiors and tops on classic hot rods, as well as Auburn's, Cord's, and Duesenberg's, so I trust his work. He has done other works for me in the past ... he is good!

That's good t know
I've always thought I'd contact my insurance company when this situation happens with my Roadster
I've been with them over 30 years
I already know a good shop who have replaced tops on Crossfires locally and will do mine through my insurance

.

I loved comprehensive coverage for new cars for about 5 years, and if your financing a used (ooops, pre-owned), you must have comprehensive coverage to protect their (finance company) investment. With the cost of vehicles going up every year because of all the electronic nanny boxes being designed in them (and the latest is making all new vehicles have a 'baby in the back' sensor), I guess the 'years ago' advice of about 5 years for comp insurance needs reevaluating (if I buy another new vehicle). When will it end... I suspect, never... All the years here and I have not heard someone using the comprehensive coverage for the roadster top/window. Learn something new every day!

We think of comprehensive as glass damage, yes the glass is not shattered but it is damaged ... and due to the construction of the rear glass and the top the only real way to replace the glass is to replace the top ... I ask my agent about it, they called the main office while I was there, Main office, after some checking, said it is covered. I figured the worst they could do was say No, so I took the chance and it paid off ... been with State Farm 50 years and have multiple policies with them, never had a problem with them
