Default Need advice to buff headlights on SRT6

Hey guys...I purchased my srt6 about 2 months ago and just noticed there is a chemical on the headlight on the surface...I have been trying different methods to take it off but I have had no luck. I went to my local crossfire dealership to get it fixed and the guy said he would charge me 125 to take the solution off. That seems pretty expensive in my opinion. Do you guys have any suggestions...I will take pics today or tomorrow to show you guys.

He's full of it. You can try a car polish that's safe for plastics and use your buffer. if that doesn't work. Here's an excellent product that's specifically for polishing plastics. I use it and can tell you I get great results.

I've used Meguiar's PlastX before. It works pretty well and is only about $6/bottle.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice so far...as for the buffer part I do not have one and I am not sure if this is something that can be expensive to invest into...As for the Novus stuff I already tried that as well and did not have any good results. I will try the PlasticX stuff. I will also take some pics of the headlights and you guys can tell me what you think. New headlights are around $320 each...expensive...

do you guys know if there is any kind of coating on the headlamps that may be damaged by polishing?

Maxwell, thanks for changing your avatar again. It was starting to freak me out. I don't like guns pointing at me.

I don't think it has a coating, but if it does it is not affected by the polishing.

I almost bought one from Carmax that had fogging on the headlights. The salesman told me you can buy a 3M product that buffs it out for about $8/bottle. Didn't inquire further and went to the Chrysler dealer across the street and bought a different SRT!

use a toothpaste containing baking soda and a terrycloth or microfiber tower.

Next apply a semi thick layer of the tooth paste to your lights.

Just buff the toothpaste off with some decent pressure and rinse with water. Here is the before and after pics.

Toothpaste huh? Looks good.
Guess I should try the Meguiar's Plastx stuff on my teeth and see what happens - .

My dealer just ordered some headlights for me under warranty. I'm happy about that since it's a different dealer from where I purchased the car. If you punch them hard enough they will replace them.

When I had my Crossfire in for warranty work a few weeks ago my service manager had asked me what was going on with my lights since he could see the deterioration on one of the lenses. We talked about it briefly and I casually mentioned that some dealerships were replacing the light assemblies under warranty. He said he would see what he could do about it. This was on a Thurs evening after work. The next day the dealership called at noon and said my new replacement lights had come in.

So I talked to one dealership and they would not replace it...I am going to talk to another one and see what they say. The only thing I am worried about it I have xenon bulbs in the car. Do you recommend taking them out before taking to the dealer?

I'm not sure what yours look like, but I had that fogging on mine when I got it and PlastX fixed it right up. They sparkle like new now.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on PlastX.

It worked wonders on my headlights, quickly removing the haze with just light hand rubbing using an old t-shirt.

I tried the toothpaste trick first, but it didn't touch the haze.

When I took delivery of the '05 600 miles ago, the headlights appeared as if someone had sanded them. You could feel the degradation of the surface. Dealer tried to buff them out to no avail. So they ordered 2 new headlights. They said there was a protective coating on them from the factory, and it was coming off (?)

Try oxy pads. Don't use on paint.

Just an FYI for the members:

I have a mazda 95' 626, don't laugh it is my bad weather daily driver (35mpg)...anyway the headlights had turned completely yellow. Driving at night was like trying to see using candles. Wasn't good.

The Fix: WetSand the headlights.

Here is what I did.

1. I used masking tape all around the headlight assembly so i wouldn't scuff the paint (any worse than it currently is).

2. Begin wet sanding with 800 grit paper

3. Next use 1000 grit paper

4. Follow up with 1500 grit paper

5. Finally polish with 3M Polishing Compound for Plastic Headlamp assembles using a power buffer.
(Doing this last step by hand will obviously take longer) This step gets those fine scratches out
and makes the headlamps look brand new.

Remember: When wetsanding, keep the surface and paper wet.

I was amazed at the results on the Mazda. Since it is older the plastic on the headlamps is thicker, so I am not sure how it would turn out with on the CrossFire?

However, I did want to post this for anyone with an older car with yellowed headlamps. It is well worth the 1.5hrs to be able to see at night. (This time does include the necessary Beer brakes of course)
And of course it is much cheaper than buying new globe assemblies.

Hope this helps someone out!

Cheers,
KrzyFast
