Default SRT6 VS SRT6 W/ Renntech kit

I got the opportunity to drive a friends stock SRT6 yesterday, he was having some problems and he wanted me to drive the car. So we went for a little ride, I didn't run it hard, but hard enough to get the feel of what it had. He had been wanting to go for a ride in my car with the Renntech kit to see how much difference there was. I got mine out of the toy box, tried to get him to drive, but he said he would rather just ride. I think I scared the crap out of him, he said that it was probably the fastest car he had ever rode in. After driving his and then getting in mine, I would compare it to getting out of a regular Xfire and getting in a SRT6 for the first time. I really couldn't believe the difference, I installed the kit at 800 mile's and had not driven the car hard before it had around 1,000 mile's on it.

Who did you go through for the purchase and install?

Renntech has great product and name that you pay for. I am sure they were the first on the market with the ODPS for this engine but after looking around I have found several decent alternatives.

I am looking at the ASP pulley system (14% boost) for $970 and a ECU tune for around $500 (or less). $1470 total and you can do the upgrade in stages. The savings will more then pay for my stereo and CF dash upgrade.

A bigger pulley is a bigger pulley IMO and the AMG supercharged 3.2L engine has been around long enough the all the Chip Tuners to have developed (or reversed engineered) the parameters/maps for the boost overdrive.

I plan on taking my stock SRT in for a dyno run. Then install the ASP pulley and dyno again for the results. Then have the ECU tuned and dyno one last time.

But this week I am having my headlamps and a tire replaced (warranty), resonator removed (when my Burns Stainless parts arrive) and next weekend I will be lowering the suspension.

As some of the threads stated, you are paying some $$ for the name. But you will be buying are reputable product. The owner of Renntech left the AMG division of MB in 1986 to start the Renntech company. I went with them because they will stand behind you and their product if any problems come up down the road. The hardest part of the install is getting the crank bolt broke loose and re-tq. to spec, It's more than just tight!

I bought a GTECH meter and received it Friday, but I didn't have time to do anything with it this weekend because the wife & I had our grand kids. I did however drop the whole bottom driverside of the dash out last night to get the power cord ran from just above the steering wheel, through the back side of the console coming out on the passengers side so I won't have the power cord mess hanging around. I mounted the meter on the instrument cluster between the speedo & tach, looks good there. And while I had the bottom of the dash out I removed the TPS bulb, it was on all the time because I didn't put sensors in my new wheels. But I'm going to have to get another power cord though, because I want to compare my car to the friends stock one.

Aaargh. Steve, you are making me go all Jekyll and Hyde about doing this.
Some days I think, 'This car is plenty fast for me. I do not need more power. I will leave it as is.'
Other days (especially after reading your posts) I think, 'DO IT! MORE POWER!!!'

I've got some other things to do (finish my basement, etc.) before I can even think about doing it, but it is always in the back of my mind.

Keep us in the know about your results, etc.

I went ahead and got the RR model, it was only about $70 more than the SS. The RR was more than what I needed, but with it you can plug it into your PC and post results on the forum.

From what I have read it will get you into the mid 12's at 112 plus. Those are about equal to stock C5 Z06 numbers! Let us know...

I have to admit that I have a slight addiction to power. The Renntech kit is my list of things to do, but based on your description it's moved up a notch. I know someone that had a car custom built by Renntech and I have to say their quality, service and a support is outstanding. They are also one of the top Mercedes tuners and have a close relationship with the factory especially since the founder is a former AMG employee.

For peace of mind and not wanting to risk damaging my motor, I would spend the extra money and go with a trusted brand like Renntech.

Based on the reading I've done, the numbers seem to be around 400 HP after the kit. I would really love to see dyno figures from a SRT-6 to back this up and not from an SLK 32.

I have a official Renntech tuner about a block from my office. Once I get my SRT I'll bring it by for a "consultation" and let everyone know what they say.

Saying that the difference is going from a non-SRT to an SRT with this upgrade says a lot!

The biggest problem is getting traction off the line. I stopped on a bridge that was concrete a while back ( where we use to race in my younger day's) and did get a really good launch, didn't hardly break loose at all. When I took the guy for a ride yesterday I had it in 1st running about 20 MPH and just floored it, it broke loose, got just a little sideway's and shifted to 2nd then when it quit spinning I let off it. He had a bad case of the big eyes, smelled like burning rubber in the car for a while.

Did the Eibach springs help with traction? Would wider tires make a difference as well? Maybe moving to 275's?

The SLK 55 also has a lot of traction issues as well. It has 394 HP.

I thought it had ~ 355 HP:

Opps, you are right. For some reason 394 HP is in my mind when I think of that car. I still know it has traction issues. With 376 ft lbs of torque, it could easily have issues hooking up.

Close relationship is right, I had check into Renntech stores before I bought my kit and I know of two MB AMG dealerships that have Renntech stores attached to them. When SI came on to the forum offering ECU's & pulley upgrades is when I bought my kit, I caught a lot of crap about how I wasted my money and I should have went with SI. I have no regrets and don't think I wasted my money. As for another post about springs & wider tire's, yes the Eibach's helped some on traction and I'm running 285/35's on the back now, I wish I'd have went even wider though.

Steve,

What kind of wheels did you go with? I'm surprised to hear that you can still break traction with 285's and softer springs. Maybe the short wheel base doesn't help either when it comes to rear end traction.
