exhaust progress
still tweaking the setup were workign on but if anyone wants their car to sound like a big block boat motor with thru hull exhaust we can make that happen fairly easily
just start the car with the downpipes off, lol.
basically how much louder then stock are you guys willing to trade for performance? i understand it has to be quiet enough durring daily driving/idle but what would be ideal in your opinion? im fully aware the avergae owner here isnt 18 years old as they are with the srt4's so louder is not encouraged as much.

i worked at Arvin Meritor, Maremont for a short time for a person with the the Supreme Performance Exhaust Tech center, Cherry Bomb - Vortex ect...
the biggest thing to watch out for is Resonation through the cab ie. inside the cockpit.

I would be willing to deal with "a little more than I would normally like" sound if its a signicant difference in power. If its only a minimal gain, give me the better sound.
I am looking for performance with with reasonable increases in decibels. I drove a GT500 recently and Ford claimed it was at 75 decibels. Not bad. However, I don't want to do the "Harley shake" - that is after a two hour ride your body parts are numb and your deaf.
I guess my goal is to get a system that maximizes the improvements I have now (pulley, CAI and ECU) without sacrificing the cars civility.
Don't want much do I?

Maybe im getting old(26 lol), but i like as little sounds as possible. I dont like them to hear me when im comming up on them.
If the exhaust was signifigantly lighter and/or offered enough power gains to justify the added sound id consider it.
But how much gains are we really going to see considernig the stock exhaust is AMG tuned and the biggest restriction ive seen is up at the o2 bung in the headers where its tiny?
Nevertheless, keep up the good work any progress is great progress.

I like to be able to hear the exhaust, but I am not a big fan of drone.
It would be nice if it was as loud or a bit louder than the blower whine.
To me, the stock exhaust seems to be too quiet for this car.
Perhaps those interested should browse YouTube for some sounds that they like and then post them (just try to stay with 6 cyl engines).
The last gen M Roadsters/Coupes, and M3s sounded pretty good IMO.

That one is much too loud for my preference.
LantanaTX's car sounds about right.
To be honest, a little more wide-open throttle sound is great, but a quiet exhaust at idle and normal operating speeds is preferred.

k, just watched that clip, that is what the car sounds like with the catback removed and yes i agree i little too loud/bumble bee sounding.
as for the headers yes i agree they are pretty much garbage IMO and am working on pulling in a spare srt6 motor to mock new ones up on, so i guess the new question is whether you guys want just downpipes/catbacks or header/dp/cb's? if we go with header we could make the the flanging setup from scratch and thus reducing the cost of making flanges that mate up to the hokey mercedes setup comming off the manifolds. so do we want to wait for the full package or settle with leaveing the headers alone.
btw, im shooting for ~ 700 for dp/cb setups or a proprietary headers/dp/cb setup for 1500-1700ish.
either setup would be 304ss, probably 321ss for the headers, full tig'd, polished and with a great warranty with all included hardware and most likely interchangable straight pipes for the cats/resonators.

Headers definitely seem like they would help this car out quite a bit.
I say you make a catback system first and see what kind of gains you can get. Then decide whether or not to go through with the headers.

I am an old fart ( 56 ). My aims would be for more hp with the suggested modifications over loudness. I am willing to accept more loudness ( if not too loud ) for the added hp. With the mods commonly being put on ( ecu tune; CAI, and ASP pully ) how much more hp are you going to get with headers/ exhaust modifications? I am not willing to pay $1500 or more for these modifications for a 5 hp gain. It would have to be at least 15-20 hp gain to justify the costs over the above mentioned modifications. The best hp gains are with the three mentioned mods perhaps with the addition of the resonator removal. Let's see what you can do with your purposed mods. That is my two cents. Will follow your posts with great interests.

I really like my Ansa system. It is not very loud but people seem to think the car must be really fast from the sound of it. It has a stock Ferrari sound that isn't loud but you can still hear its exotic sound from a ways away. Ideally I would like a muffler like what on the new Ferrari 599 or the 08 Corvette sport exhaust. These systems aren't too loud at all until you floor the gas and vacum operated buterfly's open for an uncorked straight through evil sound. I would think that an uncorked exhaust would show the best dyno numbers but when not flooring the gas the car would be very quiet.
In all the posts I have seen here, MBWorld and Benzworld - no one has made a successful set of headers for XF, SRT-6, SLK320 or SLK32. There is just no room - and the few funky set ups that have been fabbed required lifting the engine for install but offered no real gains for the $1,200 cost (and thats just for the headers). I had my CC in hand, willing to buy.
I've seen some nice headers for the C320 and C32 as they have more room for a proper design. (LET, SuperSprint)
Perhaps headers are not the answer and a high flowing exhaust manifold is. I just don't see the room for three tubes, even shorties without major frame modifications.
If you want a dual exhaust setup, just cut out the resonator and go duals to the stock muffler or you can even add a nice set of dual mufflers. You won't get much better then the stainless set up we have IMO unless your state will let you gut the catalytic converters out.

All I want is EVERYTHING! NeverEnough lives up to his name. I WOULD NOT want it to be too loud. I can deal with the noise under moderate to hard throttle, but if there is any hint of cabin resonation or drone at 45-75 MPH, it's a NO GO for me. I traded my SRT-4 for the SRT-6 because I wanted something more refined and classy, I don't want to ruin it by making it sound like a V6 Mustang with dual Cherry Bombs.
So basically, I guess I'm saying that a resonable HP increase is a must, but it's ok to sacrifice a few ponies to keep the sound in character with the car. I love the way the G35/350Z V6 sounds. Anyway to make it sound like that with a little more *****?

Like someone else said i wonder if theres any room for a real header system? I would never in a million years be willing to modify the frame to accept it.
Im willing to settle for more noise if theres gains of at least 15rwhp or more. Anything less than that and ill keep the amg system and spend the $ on the cai/tune/pulley.

Also, I'm probably just in for a cat-back style exhaust for mine.
Are you looking at making a shorty header, or more of a long tube design?
With or without cats in the system?
It seems that the long tube would be much easier to fit because you can get the primaries off the side of the engine and towards the underside of the car before you collect them. The collector and the pipes merging into it seem to be what make the headers so bulky. If you collect them under the car (long tube), you move the bulk into an area with more space.
The downside of this is that it wont bolt up to the stock catback, so everyone would have to purchase the headers AND catback to make it fit. Some people may want headers only.
