Another accident
Lilke Atomheart I too was hit on the left side during New Year's.
Twas new years eve-eve (3 days ago) and my wife and I were headed up the Nor Cal coast to Mendocino for a few days of vacation together. We were on the last leg of the trip, a 35 mile long, Xfire luvin', twisty mountain rd. As we entered one of the left turn twisties, I saw the oncoming car (another Honda) already crossing the double yellow lines...and he just kept coming. I couldn't figure out why he couldn't get control of his car and pull it back into his lane. I accelerated and moved to the right side of the lane to avoid the head on and try to move the impact toward the back of the car. He made contact at the front (hinged end) of the door then slid down the door until he hit us hard at the back of the door and rear wheel. Further into the turn was a large turnout that I was able to get to to get off the road. We were immediately surrounded by Good Sam's helping us out with road flares and cell phones that had good signals.
Some interesting notes:
On impact the car held it's ground and didn't spin wildly, pushing us off the cliff before we could safely get to the pull out.
Like Atomheart the side airbag did not deploy. We were both doing between 30 and 35 mph.
The car responded instantly to my need for speed, and steering, to avoid the head on.
With all the door damage, there is no visible damage from the inside.
The rear driver side wheel is bent on the axle about 30 degrees.
The other driver was a young man driving on bald tires. He appeared uninjured and was insured.
I'd only had the car for 5 days.
Minimal injuries for my wife and I, some soreness in our necks and my wifes back is achy. Saw the chiropractor today, got x-rays and see the family Dr. tomorrow.
Feelin' pretty lucky and DAMNED impressed with the Crossfires ability to take care of us.

Wedge,
You sound remarkably calm considering what has happened to your car. Were you still able to drive it after the accident as it looks like the back wheel would not have clearance to roll?
You just got this as a Christmas present and this is such a terrible thing that happened. I know you both were not injured and it could have been much worse if you hadn't taken fast action to steer away from the oncoming car.
I feel very saddened that you have had this happen and I sincerely wish you the best in getting her repaired. You must be heartbroken to see it like this. Gary

I feel like I'm back in the SRT-4 Forums again. 2-3 Wrecks per week, but without the fatalities...
That one looks alot worse than Heat's... It's gonna be tuff to get that 1/4 panel straight again. Hopefully, there is no serious frame damage. It should live though... Or, you guys could both put a bullet in them and get new ones. Fewer on the road makes it better for all of us in the long run...

1. The hondas in both accidents absorbed energy by themselves deforming in the collision.
2. The speeds involved were (relatively) slow.
3. Both cars were in motion and therefore the impact angle and durations were spread out along a larger area of the car.
The side impact sensors did not deploy the airbags.
I imagine that if you were to hit a rigid, immovable object sideways at 30mph, the airbags would have gone off.
In any case, Wedge, glad to hear that you and your wife made it out OK. I hope that you both will be able to iron out the financial aspects and be back on the road. God Bless!
I too am glad you and your wife are safe and sound... Cars can be fixed... people are a little more difficult to repair.
I'm sorry for your loss (damage) after only having the car 5 days.
I have had my fair share of "Evasive" manuvers in the almost 2 years I've had mine. These cars respond instantly... don't EVER let anyone tell you that they aren't nimble.
My wife and I wish you all the best at getting the repairs done quickly and at with as small cost as possible.

Sorry to hear about your accident, but very glad you and your wife are safe ! As I stated on Atoms' thread my mother was in a Kar/Ghia 70s and went out of control on a slippery road in Dallas area maybe 45 mph was broadsided and died at the scene!
It sounds like you drive very defensively and that saved you as well as your Crossfire being a safe vehicle! Good driving.
I traveled up north to Bishop and back down to Vegas X-mas week in all I drove about 700 miles. But I elected to drive my 99 sedan XJR because of weather and comfort, safety reasons.
I hope your SRT6 is repairable I know there is still alot of them on the market either way, good luck from now on !

I'm glad the most important aspect of the car was ok, the passengers!
Bummer about the car - I'm sure your wife feels just as bad knowing that her magnificent Christmas present is now in shambles.
I'm sure it will be either fixed up just right, or replaced - and the best part, there will be two healthy passengers to fill whichever route the insurance company decides to take.
Keep us posted on the outcome.
