Unhappy My SRT got into a fight with a rock. The Rock won.

Was heading home today from shopping in Seattle. I was going about 55 mph in a 60 zone with a truck in front of me and 2 cars behind me. I was going around a corner and I looked down for some reason, can't remember why. As soon as my head is up I see all these small rocks rolling on the highway from the hillside. Out of the corner of my eye I see a bowling ball sized rock directly ahead. (This all happened within 1-2 sec) I tried to go left but there is oncoming traffic so I swerve to the right but its too late. The rock hit the front right fender with a loud thud and then I rolled over it with the back right tire. I could tell something was wrong, figured the tire was at least flat so I slowed and pulled onto the shoulder. I was amazed that the rear rim acutally cracked in half. But I was even more amazed that the car didnt lose control at all. I had no problem driving it onto the shoulder. It sucks, but I guess thats what insurance is for. At least now I know exactly where the water pump is when I replace it with a johnson pump.

I go through Geico. So far so good. They had a flatbed out there in no time to bring her home. They are letting me choose what body shop I want to use as well.

my eyes!

Sorry to hear that happen to your car, but who knows what would have happened if you tried to swerve and avoid the big rock instead of hitting it! It could have been a much worse accident.

Glad to see you're ok, I hope your insurance fixes your car good as new.

Remember to check your suspension components too, they could be deformed due to the impact.

Lucky that wasn't bigger or bounced just as it passed the IC pump or the damage would have been even worse!

Sorry to hear about the accident, but rest assured Geico will take care of you... they have always had prompt and courteous service and they have it repaired it right.

Keep us posted!

Not quite the same thing happened to me last fall. Driver to my left was making a legal 45% right turn, but forced me over too close to the curb on the right and I just clipped it withe the edge of my right front tire.

The car felt solid to me as well. When I could pull over the right front wheel had a fist size chunk missing as well as the edge bead of the tire. Amazing but it did not go flat. The impact knocked the center cover off and it flew back to the rear. The right rear tire had a perfect slice through the sidewall and we think that came from the front cover. Again the car remained stable even with the rear flat.

Upon closer inspection the front wheel had been shoved to the rear about 1.5 inches and was just barely rubbing the inner liner. There appeared to be no body damage at all. Because my dealer has been so good with my cars over the last 10 years (had Crysler/Jeep products BC [Before Crossfire]) I let them take care of it.

Had the frame checked at a top notch independent and they said it was 99.99% true and probably no better than when new.

After getting it back, I noticed that there was little to no gap between the right door top front edge and the rear edge of the fender. The hood also stuck out less than 1/4" than the point where it meets with the top of the fender over the headlight assembly.

While the frame was straight, the top edge of the inner fender lip had a small "wrinkle" on the side by the battery. They had to pull the top edge of that metal fender liner in the engine compartment appx 1/4" forward. Now everything lines up like new.

The insurance company was great (Farmers) Even gave me a check for two new tires so I could choose four new ones (I only paid an extra $200 for all four including road hazzard damage replacement from Americas Tire)

Bottom line, check it carefully. These cars are built like little tanks. Check all the fender seams and make sure they replace all the front wheel components including suspension and ARB.

I know how much it hurts to see the car in this condition, but I am sure you will get it back as new...Good Luck!

I can't understand why you want to run over a bowling ball size rock just so you could get a new front spoiler, fender IC pump, rim, tire ect ect.

Sorry to here about your SRT, GLAD TO HEAR HOW WELL SHE HANDLED THE ROCK. I think that sez alot about the CF.

When I was looking for new tires the guy at one of the shops told me he had just ordered a new wheel for another Crossfire because the owner had hit something and the rim split. That is the first time I have actually seen one, that is amazing. Glad you are OK hope you get all fixed up in a hurry.

I remember seeing another member who had their rim split in a similar fasion. It was just a small pickup truck in front of me, I had just got behind them which is why I was going 55 in a 60, They were going kinda slow and I planned on passing them. The rock fell down the hill on its own, the truck had nothing to do with it.

A Geico rep called today and said they dont have a claim adjuster nearby. He said to take the car to a shop of my choice (with a flatbed provided by them of course), get an estimate, take some pictures and they will send a check. It looks like just the front fender and rear rim will need to be replaced. I want at least 2 new rear tires but will push for 4. Ill just get a quote for continentals, then put on Michelins and pay the difference.
