You're thinking "header wrap". A tight fitting, flame retardant, heat absorbing woven fabric that can actually destory heated exhaust tubing due to a lack of expansion.
I think this thread is in reference to a loose "insulated pipe wrap". The intent being to stock engine temps from heating up the CAI pipes and ambient intake air.

Re: to Wrap or not to Wrap
Well incase you still want to see what it looks like heres a picture of my Needswings intake that I wrapped. Its just some high temp reflective wrap from autozone. Before I wrapped it I used an IR thermometer to see the temp of the intake and it was usually 120 F. So although some people think it won't matter, it doesn't seem like feeding cold air through a hot pipe will keep the air as cold as possible.

Re: to Wrap or not to Wrap
I think once the air enters the filter it is consumed in the engine before any heat soak from the hot intake tube can influence it. I think it draws 600 or so cubic feet per minute, (just guessing) but the air is only in the tube under acceleration for miliseconds. I think the temp of tube is irrelevant. I think the temp of the air ie. outside vs inside the engine compartment is the real difference.
Re: to Wrap or not to Wrap
Well the intake dissapates the heat a lot quicker with this wrap on, in other words if I park it it cools down in a matter of minutes where as without the wrap it would stay warm for a good while. As for actual intake temps, I have no sort of sensor or monitoring equipment set up so I can't tell you what effect it had on it if any.
I spose the only thing I could say to the fact that it may help is that throughout my whole night of dragracing tonight the times did not seem to drop off despite the engine being super hot for my first run and not any cooler for my second run and then for my third run I actually just circled around and got staged right away again.

theres a link to my thread with my times.
I don't know that it actually does anything and I am not going to argue with anyone that it does, but I figure it can't hurt. I would assume there is a possible effect, only because they do sell those C02 bulbs you can put in the middle of your intake to cool your intake temps, and air to air intercoolers have air passing through them just as fast but they seem to have some sort of effect. I'm no physicist nor do I play one on tv, but I just started a job as a maintenance mechanic, and am learning a lot about heat exchange in very different applications so I tried to apply that here and see what happens. Anyways good luck with whatever option you choose ( I think you already chose not to).
