Manual SRT-6?
I was just wondering if there's any way that you can replace the automatic transmission in the SRT's with a manual? I know this is possible in some vehicles (I almost did it in a Jeep Wrangler I used to have) but I didn't know if the SRT's were compatible with such a transformation. It just perplexes me why they did not offer a manual option for the SRT's because I'm itching for an Aero Blue SRT-6 Roadster but I just don't know if I can deal with the automatic because shifting gears just feels so right.....

Are you one of those guys that says he can shift as fast as those mushy automatics?. Or are you one that figures the guys at AMG just dropped the ball due to stupidity when they made the decision to go automatic? When you can drive an SRT to its' automatics' "limit" I will be happy to install one for you...
I'm not exactly an afficionado of "rowing your own", so to speak, however I can do so competently. That said, I have never seen an auto quite like the one on the SRT. Its almost as if it reads your mind. Go into a corner at speed and hit the brakes a bit, the transmission downshifts so that by the time you're back on the accelerator you're ready to explode out of the corner.
I use the AutoStick a good amount too. It is more responsive than most other auto-manuals, especially when you get on it a little bit.
You probably could mount a stick to this tranny, but I would imagine that it would be a ridiculous amount of work and expense. Even if it had a stick, I highly doubt that any driver could beat the times the auto will give you.

I used to think that a sports car had to have a stick shift and bought several with them but I have to agree with our friend from Philly that the auto is better than what almost anyone on the planet could do with a manual. Drive an srt and tell me you can shift that well. That's the bottom line.
I think alot of people just simply don't buy the argument that any kind of DSG, SMG, or automatic can ever replace the *feel* of rowing your own gears no matter how *fast* it may be. I however do not fall into that category, and while I don't find the auto in the XF as sublime as some of you do (it's a little twitchy compared to the beautiful units in the E46 BMWs), it is one of the better ones I've had.
The 6 Speed ZF in my 7 Series by contrast is a piece of ****.

This is Roadster with a stick and I feel I kind of have to defend my affection for the manual. It is not about speed. It is about integration with the machinery as you travel over the road. As a Purist I would like my "sports car" to be as manual as possible....
Oh BS... I'm salivating over an SRT now. Who am I kidding?
Roadster with a Stick
Not tradin' it in either

No, I am not insulting the automatics at all I haven't had the pleasure of driving an SRT yet. I don't even know of one for sale anywhere nearby. Usually, though, when you think sports cars you think manual. I was just interested to learn why they decided to go strictly automatic. If it is that amazing of a transmission then I'm definitely not saying it was a bad idea. I have never owned a supercharged car so I don't know what it's like to handle one with a manual. The closest I've done is drive my friend's supercharged SLK but it's a 4 cylinder so I'm sure it's very different. I don't know I just love the feel of authority I get by having complete control over the gears but if it's going to be that much faster with the auto then obviously why would you go manual? Didn't mean to make it seem like I was saying I am an amazing driver or that autos suck I was just curious as to the choice made for no manual option and to see what it would take to make one a stick.
Valorian,
Don't get to concerned.
The SRT guys are kinda touchy about this issue. It may be why my sig annoys some of them. Wasn't intentional.
Had I known, I might have come up with something else. In fact I had, but by then I was havin' too much fun with it.
In any event, if someone comes up with a manual SRT, I'm all for it but would not attempt it myself. so I'll just be.....
Roadster with a stick
SSB NA and stock.
BTW Maxwell, that makes perfect sense but my Cummins is turbo'd and the stick is just fine.

Don't sweat it Valorian. I am of the same opinion as you. I was VERY hesitant about buying an automatic tranny sports car. I love the control you have when you shift your own gears. I love it, love it, love it! It's good clean fun.
That said, all I had to do was drive the SRT-6, and I was sold. I love the car - automatic tranny and all. Of course, if AMG emailed me tomorrow and said they would like to put a manual in my car for free, I'd take them up on it.
The thing is, that since the car is an AMG special, it's got an auto. AMG is all about automatic trannies. And, I'll give them kudos, they make one hell of a tranny. But it is definitely an AMG thing.

Worry not, Valorian, this subject has been "talked" to death here on this forum - you won't be the first & certainly won't be the last!
That being said, this automatic is something else!

lol i was just picking.
If the SRT6 came with a stick, then that's what I would have bought new 4 years ago.
But I like my 2-seater converts with a stick and that was my first choice over power. It is a clunky shifter, esp from 1st to 2nd. But I always feel I am driving rather than riding.
When the opportunity came to buy an SRT6 cheap (well, relatively cheap compared with new), it was a no-brainer and I decided on the coupe. Frankly they make great fraternal twins - not identical.
