I may get flamed for this, but I can explain. I've lived in Las Vegas area for almost my whole life, it never snows here, and we wear t-shirts all year long

This year was definitely a change as we were hit with at least 6" of powder, everywhere!

I thought I could get out of my neighborhood with only an inch or so on the road, but it didn't happen. NO TRACTION, even in winter mode. If the road wasn't at a decline, I wasn't going anywhere unless it was in reverse. This was with TC on and OFF, with the ESP grandmas going freaking crazy every time the car moved.

Long story short, I got stuck in my own neighborhood and couldn't make it back home while other vehicles drove around without too many problems. I never could have imagined that the car wouldn't even make it up a 1% grade with snow like that. Anyways, I have been humbled (but I'm not worried - it will probably be 60 something degrees in the daytime in a week or so)

 

Just curious....do ya have the summer tires on there ??

Yup, same happened to me last night. Only, I could drive just barely. I have the OEM Contis on and the rear wheels are just about done I think. My rear end was all over the place... had to keep straightening out the car, could not start from a stop in 1st; had to use 2nd, and I had it in 3rd gear going 15mph which helped a lot, thank God for a manual transmission! All I could think is these people are looking at my Florida tag thinking, "stay away from this guy!"

Oh ya, I could not imagine having a sprint booster in that crap. How you all manage that is waaay beyond me. In an Auto I could see it working, but in a manual no way. Unless you slip the clutch like crazy.

 

I'm baffled. I've been getting around in the snow and ice just fine on OEM tires.

 

Well I must say I have had a different experience than you. I have snow tires mounted on limited wheels for my SRT's winter setup and last year I got stuck in a 3-4 inch snow storm. I drove home 60 miles up/down several fairly steep hills and then the NJ turnpike at 35-40 mph. I found the traction control lite was flashing like crazy at times but if I was VERY ginger with the throttle I had no fishtailling and moved easily.

My wifes 04 limited has 42k miles pilots on it and day before yesterday I drove it from Brooklyn back home about 40 miles. I will say that it was not as stable as the snow tired SRT but I made it with little incident.

Bottom line is if you must drive in the snow, use the winter mode and be very light on the gas.

Snow tires in Las Vegas will last you and your decendents for generations.

 

i recently put blizzaks on the back end of my car. and as you can see i live in illinois. my car is taking off quicker in snow than most of the people in suvs. im having a blast driving it im so proud of the way its been so far and we got about 6 inches the other day

 

last year when i got off from work here in east tennessee we had some powder
maybe 3 inches.. had no problem driving home 30 miles away on OEM tire's..

 

A couple weeks ago my son clomped into the house asking my help pushing his car up the driveway and into the garage. My 60' driveway is a slight upward incline. and we had a couple inches of snow, with about 6" of drifting on one side of the drive.

You guessed it. The rocket scientist had driven into the drift and, of course, the rear wheels just spun. So I told him to get out of the way, backed it up twenty feet, and drove around the drift and through the 2" of snow and into the garage without any wheel spinning. It helps to have driven RWD for years and to have an MT6.

These go ok in snow, but I prefer my Audi quattro.

 

With the right tires & some weight in the back either Crossfire will do OK.
Though I drive the Wintermobile when the snow gets serious (another foot forecast for tonight.......your storm, Milk!) I have been in situations when we get these 'surprise' snow storms.
Got stuck in a 3" snowfall last year & I drive w/ F1 A/S all year long.
Once you get going though, the Xfire feels great on the road. It's stable & feels very secure when zipping along the highway on plowed roads.
OK, well maybe 'zipping' isn't the right word!

Phew thank god all of that is over. Lots of people had a hard time getting back to their houses in my neighborhood because it received much more snow than the rest of the valley. Some cars parked in odd places or completely crooked.

The pilot sports wouldn't grip at all as the car would actually start sliding down the crown of the road! Like fat ice skates! Learned my lesson. My truck drove ok though it though

 

I very recently replaced the stock Michelin PS2s with PS2 All-Seasons ... I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee for snowy days, but got caught in the Lehigh Valley in the XF. The PS2 ***, while in "W"inter mode and easing on the throttle, did just great. Prior to the snow, I gave them a little test in the rain ... with no traffic around, I gave them a quick 3-digit speed test, and they worked great then, too. I can honestly say this is the best overall handling car I have ever owned.

 

The Pirelli Sottozeros I put on my car last year have already paid for themselves in peace-of-mind. Excellent snow tires!
