I removed my resonator and would not do it if I it to do over again. I spent the $$$ to get the good stuff to do it and it sounds ok....it's just not what I had hoped for. I removed the resonator off my 2007 Dodge Charger R/T and it sounds like a beast...just what I had hoped for. The SRT6 just has an odd tone to it. Not sure if removing the cats would help or hurt??

Really? mine has a real nice 'mellow-tone.' it's deeper and has absolutely no RASP(which i HATE!) it still sounds basically stock but a bit more aggressive. there must be a big difference in either 'interpretation' of the tone, or in how you perform the modification! thoughts?

di you look at my pics? is this how you did yours?

Looks like the same basic set up. A Stainless Y and U cut to fit. I don't have any rasp either, I just find the tone kinda "dull" without a real performance sound to it. At least it does not sound like this "fart can" muffler I heard on an Acura RXS last night!!!

uggghhhh. i HATE that sound! my buddy has a 350Z that sounds so horribly disgusting. the thing seriously sounds like a long wet fart as he accelerates. sorry for the juicy metaphor.... he's got headers and deleted cats on his Z.

btw, i used 3" piping for my setup instead of the 2.75" others used. the 3" sounds much more aggressive. even my girl likes it! bonus!

LOL thats funny about the fart sound.

I doubt theres any noticeable sound difference from a 2.75" pipe to a 3" pipe But if your girl likes the extra girth then thats what counts.

no seriously, we installed 2.75" first, then the 3"

HONESTLY, it did make a sound difference. some cars are just really 'finicky' like that. all three of us in the shop noticed the difference. not just pulling your leg.

Thanks for all the great posts!!

I've looked a lot over this forum about the resonator deletes, and since my SRT-6 truly is a daily driver (80+ miles per day), I think I will simply go with the InMotion chip upgrade and call it a day.

Seriously, these cars stock are fast, very fast! Sure, I'd love for it to be faster, but I've said that about all my cars once I get used to them. If there weren't so many friggin' deer and cops by me (and if more fast cars wanted to play a bit), I'd consider really working the car over. But again, for a fun daily driver that truly is a "sleeper" to the masses that don't know what the car is packing, it really is great even bone stock.

OK pics!

The first one shows the resonator delete on the bench (too boomy)

The next 2 with a high flow resonator and the largest backbox that would fit. All in T304 stainless, lighter than stock and sounds just right!

Hopefully with another 10-15hp as others have seen on the dyno, certainly feels quicker!

Why not finish the job and take out the rear cats? Looks nice anyway tho.

You guys!!!

After the resonator delete I was thinking to myself "why can't I leave things alone" and now I am toying with the rear cats Grrrrrr. (LOL)

I wonder if it would still pass emissions testing?

Leepie,
Thanks for this very usefull post. I know everyone on here would like at least a little more sound pressure out of our high powered sewing machines. Every one of these cat/muffler/resonator threads yeilds usefull info. Thanks again for sharing your experience, including the mutpliple phases, materials used, shop advice, opinion, etc..
Matt.

Looks good, hey miata 5.0, I built up my wife's 96 with a 1.8l. I bored it .120 over went with a scat racing stroker crank, jackson racing supercharger... 349hp. I should have just put in the 302, it would have been easier

LeePie, just wondering what made the biggest sound difference, the high flow resonator or the back box.

Makes you wanna go Hummm..

Do you have the high flow make and model number handy?

Thanks

As I had them fitted together I am not able to tell. We did try a couple of back box's though and needed to use the largest we could. This car really takes some silencing!!
I will try to find out the part number etc. What I can tell you is that the resonator is used for race applications, the internals are kind of rifled like a barrel don't know how that helps with the noise but only stuff that works makes it onto the track!!

Sounds like a jet on WOT!

I have had a chat with the custom shop that soted my cat back, the resonator is their own design and they make it on site. They use it for formula 3 race cars with no loss of HP and quiet enough to pass noise regs for the track.
