Check Engine Light code P0505
Check Engine Light code P0505
OK, I've been getting a check engine light just about every time I drive my SRT6. The code is almost always P0505 Idle Control System Malfunction, but once or twice (at the Dragon) I got a P0507 Idle Control System RPM Higher Than Expected.
The car runs fine, so its not a pressing issue, obviously. I'd like to know what those errors really indicate. I've asked a few folks, and haven't received a clear answer. Keep in mind these errors showed up right after I added my intake manifolds, catch can, and ecu tune. I _really_ doubt the mods are to blame - so don't get the wrong idea, I'm not blaming anyone. I just want to know what is causing the codes.
I did check over my work on the mods. I can't find any leaks or unsealed connections on the intake path (manifolds, y-pipe, catch can connection to the throttle body, etc). I even had Rob double check my work. No smoking guns.
Has anyone else had this code pop up? If so, what was it?
Suggestions (other than taking it to the Chrysler garage)?

Re: Check Engine Light code P0505
CEL = P0505 = Idle Air Control Motor (IAC) circuit condition or idle speed higher/lower than expected.
Definition: IAC circuit condition or idle speed higher/lower than expected.
Explanation: The ECM has detected that the IAC counts are higher or lower than expected, the engine speed is not its expected range.
Probable causes:
1- Vacuum leak on the engine
2- Dirty throttle body
3- IAC motor is defetive
4- Poor electrical connection to the IAC valve.
I got this after install the catch can (I removed the throttle body and manifolds). Went back unplugged, and re-plugged everything, checked for boost leaks, made sure everything is seated properly, and checked the tightness of all of the screws. Reset the code by unplugging the battery and I haven't got it since (300miles ago). IMHO I'd start there. Good Luck. -Steve

Re: Check Engine Light code P0505
Interesting:
While I was driving today - I was going about 35 mph and not accelerating nor decelerating - and the car behaved as if I had taken my foot off the throttle and then put it back a moment later. It did this three or four times in the span of a few blocks.
There is something very wrong with either my throttle or the sensors involved with it.

Re: Check Engine Light code P0505
I got both P0505 and P0507 codes yesterday, when going to lunch. Got home to inspect, the culprit was my bottom clamp on the passenger side y-pipe coupler, underneath side slide off. I replaced ALL clamps, no more codes and no more rough idle.
Patiently awaiting 11’s from you, tom2112!

Re: Check Engine Light code P0505
Since I never posted what the problem was, I figured I should come back and tell all for the sake of those that find this with the search button.
My codes (P0505 and P0507) both completely went away after I fixed a boost leak. My intake manifold gaskets were blown, and I was leaking boost. Once I fixed that, the codes went away and never came back.
If you get these codes, be sure to check every point along the air intake path. Make sure that all your hoses are clamped, pipes sealed, and manifold gaskets are good.

Re: Check Engine Light code P0505
Well here's one for you boys. I got the code P0505 with engine light. So I went to Auto Zone and they checked it to produce the code. Then ,by recomendation, I went to a nearby Mercedes repair shop ( not the dealer) to check it out . The manager said if he hooks it up to the computer it would cost $75.00. I was ok with that but first asked if they would check for loose fittings or leaking hoses first so as not to incur the full 75, he was ok with that. The tech showed late, I'm waiting in the showroom and see the tech go out to my car with the computer. I already said I had a code P0505. Didn't check for leaks or tighten clamps or anything. Long story short came back saying the IAC was fine but had two other codes, P02A2 and P202B , idle air faults. This and a diagnosis of intake manifold gaskets to be replaced. A total of $845.
After shock set in, I said I would think about it as it was running fine, idle was just slightly high. So I go home checked the clamps and found the right clamp from the needswings cai coupler was a little loose, and found a vacume hose hanging loose from the right side.
disconnected the battery for a few hours, reconnected it . Engine light gone for over 100 miles, and the idle went from about 900 to about 700.
Now running great, scam or what do you think?
I'm going back for my $75.00 bucks based on the fact that they were supposed to check for leaks first.
Pissed in Charleston!

Re: Check Engine Light code P0505
I wouldn't be surprised to find that any number of owners that had the P0505 code had a vacuum hose disconnected. That would account for the higher idle speed. Glad you didn't jump at their offer for a fix, far too many owners get sucked in and not just Xfire owners either.
Re: Check Engine Light code P0505
And here is the rest of the story.
After driving about 100 miles with no engine light appearing, I made my way back to the repair shop for a refund of the diagnostic test fee. Keeping my cool, I explained at detail my experience, the office manager not only refunded my $75. but took me back through the shop to meet all the techs, got an apology from the tech that misdiagnosed the car. He said he would be extra careful next time and have a second opinion on any future fix.
Then the manager took me aside and assured he would never be put on my car in the future.
I think my *** was appropriately kissed.
And yes I will go back as they were highly recommended.
