Dreaded P0505 has me in it's grasps!
 

Was in traffic yesterday and noticed my check engine light turn on. I stopped by a local Auto Zone on the way home and had it scanned: P0505 Idle System Malfunction. They cleared it and I drove the rest of the way home, it never came back on.

This morning I do a forums search on that code and find a bunch of others that have had it with culprits ranging from lose manifold bolts, to a catch can vacuum leak. So I went out this morning and rechecked all my bolts on my manifolds. A few were indeed able to be turned with a little torque but no where near "loose".

Decided to take it for a drive and low and behold it turned on again at a light. Stopped by a local auto store and had it scanned a second time. Same code: P0505.

I'm checking to see if there has been any more findings on this code and it's possible culprits. Also I wanted to make sure it's safe to drive it before getting to the bottom of it. Thanks all in advance!

I'd put dollars to donuts that it is an air leak somewhere on the intake side. Catch can hose, intake manifold gaskets, hoses connecting the manis to the Y pipe, the intake manis not torqued down enough, something right in line with those items.

I messed with mine for months until I finally removed the manis and found blown gaskets. So you may have to dig.

first check all the connections from the filters to the intake manifolds, incloding the oil vent hose on the drivers side of the intake tube,, then see if you have a slight rough idle, if yes it is most likely the intake manifold ( the maniflods are the ones that have srt6 on them) no for you for people that do not know that. lol. jim

I cleared my code and it hasn't returned. Don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

I checked, looked, tightened and searched but I couldn't identify the problem. It wasn't until I removed the intake manifolds and put new gaskets on that the code went away. With the leak the car would idle a little rough, not too bad, and the idle speed was higher than normal. Just tightening the bolts didn't help. I had to change the gaskets. Good luck, I hope you find another cause but I think you have a gasket leak.

I think Rob makes some mainfold gaskets that seal much better than the stock ones FYI.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I took at look at all the vacuum hoses and everything looked perfect- sans the one that connects to the little y-clip above below the throttle body- I can't quite get to it at this point.

I'll check that part first- as that little y-plug seemed to not be very tight when it was originally installed. If that's not the culprit I'll have to remove the manifolds and check the gasket (ie and install a new one- it's only a one time use gasket).

If THAT doesn't do it I don't know where else to check. I don't know if anyone remembers but I've had a bizzare sound between 1500-2500 rpms that sounds high pitch.

When I had Chris's brother's shop install my super cooler they looked into it and said it sounded like it was coming from the throttle body. Bizzare....though I don't know if it's related.

you don't have to remove the manis to do that...I removed the throttle body...take CAI hoses off, 4 screws, and you can expose the the y-hose connections....something Rob taught me while at Woodward...that's how I installed my catch can...much easier...

THe throttle body has a short rubber gasket beneath it that can split or in my case separate completely leaking air into the intake system. I repaired mine BTW.

Get a garden hose to stick in your ear and with about 3' length, probe the areas in interest without tearing everything apart for the exercise of it all.

Just an update everyone. The upper manifolds were taken off and the gaskets inspected. The driver's side gasket was folded under in two corners (twisted almost). Reinstalled a fresh set of gaskets and haven't had the problem since. *crossing fingers*

Most of the P0505's seem to be the gasket leaking. I'm happy to hear you got it resolved.

Hey Folks. While poking around the RCM I also noticed what may be causing some of us (myself included) problems with getting the dreaded PO505 fault code. Once I get a look at a few different RCM's I may be able to determine if what I suspect might be the problem, is the problem.
Once I can verify these problems (need more RCM's) I'll do one of my DIY's with extensive pics and write up on how to fix the RCM yerself for both problems.
If this all works out we will save big $$$ and a lot of headaches.

Maybe some one can inform me what an RCM is. I looked around and could not find a reference. I think it is rather elitist to post something like that where only a small handful of individuals know what that means without at least defining it once in the post even; if it was posted somewhere else. Thanks in advance.

Hey thanks for the post. Sorry to sound so cranky. I appreciate what you have done in contributing to the forum. Very interesting mod. I hope you do find a solution to the RCM module failures. I am sure it is only a matter of time before it hits me. Thanks again.
