Default Advice for Heat Exchanger

2005 Aero Blue Coupe
#39138
52000 miles
stock except for Johnson C30 IC pump

Hi,

I'm new here, but have already learned a lot from you all. We had been experiencing the surging and power loss and it had me mystified. At the same time I hit a skunk on the road that broke the fitting on the tank of the HE. I have a new Johnson C30 pump to put in, but after seeing the HE, it was so plugged up with crap that I think that could also contribute--nothing a good powerwashing wouldn't fix I think.

I would like advice regarding my options on the HE. We may be selling the car, (heresy here, I know!--anybody interested?) so keep that in mind. The car is great, but we need a daily commuter that likes the snow better. I have a radiator guy that says he will crimp a new tank on if I can find one (an attractive option after pricing the OEM HE.) Also, I figured that several of you that had done upgrades had OEM HEs sitting around you would be willing to part with. Alternatively, if everything else is stock, I wondered if I would see a noticeable difference upgrading to a LET HE, remembering we may not be keeping the car.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Gary

So what does a OEM HE go for these days?

I'd say hit Eurocharged's website...great upgrade, not too expensive...I'll bet chearper than stock too. I let EC install mine, but it seems to be not too hard to install if you wanted to do so yourself. I'm very happy with mine.

I'm not too concerned about the difficulty, actually, especially since I already have everything including the radiator pulled out. My main question is whether the upgrade would give me noticeable results where everything else but the pump is stock and if it would pay if we don't keep the car--especially if I could find a used OEM in good shape. It would be nice to slip it into the same mounts. I know LET said something about sending sheet metal screws to mount theirs in.

In answer to what an OEM HE goes for now, Chrysler quoted me around $450. That hurts where my only problem is a broken fitting. I considered trying to repair, but when it breaks the coolant leaves in a hurry. My wife usually drives the car, so I hate to chance it. Also, in their wisdom, Chrysler apparently made the same light do double duty for high coolant temp and low coolant level--a big distinction to me. I guess I'm not too clear on how isolated the systems are, for that matter, between engine and IC.

Thanks! Gary

I've got a used stock HE.
Was keeping it in case one of my cars goes in for warranty work.
What do ya think it's worth?

I just replaced mine with a E55 stocker, so also have OEM sitting around. $100+shipping.... just putting it out there.

Hmm, Mike

Maybe that might lessen the chance of it rejecting the transplant!

Yes, I understand that, but is it right to discriminate no matter the color? Just kidding, appreciate the response!

This is a great find here as nobody hardly ever sells anything off of a AREO BLUE CF and your car will appreciate you for it

OH and if you did find on a green xf you can bet the cooler came from a BLACK one
