Default Bigger Rims, Stock look.

I've been giving some thought of late to the wheels on my SRT-6. I have
the stock wheels and though they can be a pain to clean, I'd really like to
keep that look. On the other hand, I'd like to have a set of rims are just a
little bit wider (front and back) yet still keep the tire's proper position on
the inside edge. I.e. all the "growth" in tire size would show up by the tire
extending to or beyond the wheel wells, but not by getting closer to the
framing on the inside edge.

So, I've looked at a lot of rims lately, on several differnt web sites, and I've
seen some that look good, but don't have the stock "look". I was thinking
that it would be possible to take one of each rim (front and back) to a shop
that has the tooling to be able to create a rim that looks the same, yet has
more "lip" and is wider. Fronts at at least 9" and backs at least 10. Maybe
9.5" and 10.5/11.0" for the back. Something cut from blocks of aluminum or aluminum alloy. I'd really like to put some 315's on the back to try to get
the traction problem under control and wider tires up front to try to
manage some of the understeer.

Problem is, I don't have a clue as to where I should go for such a thing, nor
what I could expect to pay. So, before I delve too deeply in to this
option, I thought I'd ask here for advice.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Coyote

If you are wanting to stay with a stock look, have you considered the Mandrus Millenium wheels?

Steve, if you remember, XRay had the Mandrus Milleniums on his car in Atlanta. They are beautiful wheels.

Hi 32Krazy,

Yeah, I did see those and thought they looked the closest to what I
wanted, and may be my choice if find my other idea to be too costly.
Would it not be cool to to be able to have a set that looked like that,
but which you could snap your stock center covers into?

Thanks for your reply. I do like the way those look on a Crossfire.

Holy Cow, $10,000? I figured a few hundred to maybe $600-700 range
per wheel. Might have to abandon this idea

Thanks,

the cost of the block of aluminium would be over 500$ just for 1 wheel. if i remember they took a 100lb block nad ended up with a rim that weighed about 15 lbs! it was a jesse james show i think

This wheel looks more like the Limited's, but the manufacturer offers a variety of custom offset and coating options. Stylish AND clean.

Hmmm, that's a lot for a smallish block of aluminium, guess bauxite has
gone up in price along with the rest of the metals. So, maybe as a one
off this is not a great idea. But, if I could convince a shop that others
might be interested... I am discouraged at the suggested costs for doing
this, but I think I'll still spend a little time to see what I can find out.
Thanks for the input 32Krazy.

That is a very nice rim. There is just something, maybe the offset spokes
that just gives me a bad vibe. Still, I bet that would look real nice on a
Crossfire. Thanks for sharing.

It is going to be tough to get much larger than a 20x10 in the rear. I know a few of us have gone larger and even with just a 285 rear tire; I get a small amount of rubbing the inner wheel well on bad roads. I am sure you could go larger, but it would take pounding in the inner wheel well with a sledge hammer and then rolling the fenders too.

The fronts are a whole different story…they are going to rub no matter what. On sharp turns or backing up with the wheels turned, you will rub. This is not a huge deal, but I only have 19x8s with 225/35/19s which is smaller than most and I still got a small amount of rubbing.

Having custom wheels made is not that expensive, and when I say custom I mean sizes and offsets. You can buy DPEs for around $1K each and they will make them any size you want. Much cheaper than 360, HRE and such.

I think it would be interesting to see some 19x11s on a SRT6….I can give you my contact at DPE if you like.

For the money...these are tough to beat!! They look great on that black X-Fire but look AWESOME on a lowered SRT6~

I put something together but the cost was staggering and so it never ended up happening. They looked awesome though and for a 25 spoke wheel, it would be tough to beat.

Those are some sharp looking rims. That would certainly keep the "art
deco" look and feel. Very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing.

BLKFIN, yeah, you see that is what I'm wanting to avoid. I don't want
the rims to extend any of the added width to the inside edge of the rim.
I want to draw the rim out, so to speak, so that is extends outwards
from the car and not inwards. That should take care of the rubbing,
especially as I intend to stay with 18" up front and 19" on the rear.

So, a $1,000 doesn't sound too horrible. Can certainly by a nice set of
pre-mades for less than a set of customs at $1K/wheel, but I do want
to make sure that the rims meet my specs, and finding pre-manufactured
that don't extend part of the additional width towards the centerline of
the car is difficult.

Thanks for the 411,

Coyote

They also have a custom wheel builder where you can select colors/finish types for the inner/outer lips, wheel face, etc. Lexani Wheels - World Leader in Custom Wheels - Custom Wheel Builder

Here are a couple of custom samples I created:

Cool draft work there. Bet that took a little time to put together. 25
spoke? Dude, you must love spending time cleaning your wheels .
15 spoke is plenty for me. So, you said the cost got high? Do you mind
sharing how high?

Thanks,

Coyote
