I think your refering to the secandary air injection pump.

 

Secondary injection pump ? Sounds good to me.
Aside from comming on at cold start-up, and only occasionally, what is its function...save ,perhaps, setting a check engine light on?

It increases the oxygen content to get the cats heated up and running quicker so the engine can go into closed loop. Kinda like EGR only backwards.

 

onlything it does for me is provide the check engine light.

PS...Rudy and daithi2, I noticed that the hose from the air pump was dislodged, perhaps causing the check engine light.

Do you happen to know what code(s) you're getting and can you hear it cycle when you first start the car after it's been sitting awhile? unless your hose came disconnected like RPatton's, you probably have either an intermittent wiring issue or a bad air pump.

Robert, do you have an OBDII scan tool? If you do, what code(s) is it giving you?

 

Rudy, my scangauge II will not talk to the car. I've got a local shop that will scan/clear it for me.Also have all of the codes so that I can look it up.
