Need Help... Alternator Nightmare
I have been through 2 alternator's now that have been the incorrect ones. One from Autozone and now Rock Auto. Problem is Chrysler is telling me the battery terminal to the alternator has to be squared. I ordered the same one I have now a Valeo from Rock Auto and sure enough it isn't squared.
To the guys who bought a rebuilt Valeo did it have a squared terminal or did u have to shave urs down? This has become a bigger issue then what it is.
TIA.

I just went out an looked at my spare alternator and the terminal for the battery cable is a bolt... nothing square about it. The only other connection is a plug in connector. The battery cable does have a flat connection with a 90 degree bend in it.... that connector fits in a molded in part around the terminal lug...
There should be nothing difficult in a swap out... pull the connector and remove one nut cover and nut...
(plus the mounting bolts)

Mike,
Chrysler is telling me the screw thing coming out from the battery terminal where my finger is pointed shouldnt be rounded but squared. It connects to something squared to the battery. Are these guys just idiots or what?

Obviously that was my first thought, but being its German who knows. My point being is I was wondering with the guys with the Valeo is that area squared instead of a circle?

Softball, here is the pics of the MB Valeo alternator....and the battery cable setting in place....

It looks like you got the wrong altenator....

Let us know if you got this sorted out. If you did I will spare to tell you how I ended up replacing my alternator (with my restricting factor being down time).
Z,
I been running off my "faulty" one for over a month now. Havent had any issues except the temp gauge going up and down, but never running too hot. The coolant light is on too. Chrysler told me the engine was running 400 degrees warmer then it should being the alternator.
I kinda wonder if its the alternator, but the car runs fine. I just want to replace it though to be on the safe side.

You may not be running too hot now, but it is still in the winter months and once summer comes you may have some more serious temps to deal with.
Also, if the dealer told you that the engine is running +400F from normal operating temperature...I might think about going to another dealer, because honestly. That isn't possible without making the engine go all sorts of not right.
I agree. I want this figured out before the summer months arrive. All I know is that if I turn my AC on my temp gauge goes all the way to Hot. If I leave it alone it stays fine.
What do u think?

Im thinking this alternator would be the correct one. Its off a members limited, but i'm sure it will work for the SRT 6 since mine is a Valeo as well.
Thoughts? Mike and Z?

Maybe the fan controller is faulty.
I thought our ac went on at other times, as when defog was selected, as well as when the ac button was pushed.

I do know that my original huge issue was that Rock Auto delivered an alternator that did not come with an 8rib pulley, which is what is needed to go with the rest o the pullies on the SRT. Man that was a PITA.

as I mentioned before, I dont know if there is a rating difference between a NA and SRT... can't think of why there would be, but.......

I'm pretty sure the difference is the number of ribs on the pulley. For some reason when I ordered my replacement it only had 5 ribs. Had to have an alternator guy do some frankenstein work. It's all good now though.
P.S. Put the car back in 'S' Summer mode this week (even though it is only 40 outside) and it is great to actually get all of my gearing and RPMs back. Man she can still scream. Love it.
I was thinking the same thing about the fan too, but that could be a whole other issue with the coolant light coming on.
Takes about 5 mins for the dial to read Hot and it goes all the way to the top when the AC is on.
Whenever I use the Heater, defroster with the heater, just using the air from the outside and the heated seats the temp gauge stays normal maybe a little over into the hot side, but goes back to normal after awhile.
When this issue first arose I was traveling down the freeway and i saw smoke coming up out of my hood and my battery light came on as well. Battery light went off, but Chrysler told me the alternator was faulty. Wanted 1800 for everything. Yeah right!
I'm sending this alternator back to RockAuto they been very helpful about it and just get this one from the member for 100 shipped and cross my fingers.
