Default Steve (32Crazy) should be proud of me!

A while back I had a stainless manifold bolt seize in my supercharger. I tried to get crafty removing it and ended up breaking it off.

I drove over to Steve's and even he was unable to remove it without likely breaking an easy-out off into it and making things worse.

Well, today I finally got off my a$$ and decided to fix it.

I went out and bought a tap-and-die set but was unable to find a long enough drill bit to drill through the manifold into the supercharger. I did some head scratching and came up with an alternative.

I used the manifold gasket to transfer the bolt locations onto a metal template. After drilling the holes into the metal, I had to improvise a bit (stacks of washers) to secure the template in place on the supercharger. After securing the template I drilled out the hole with a 7/32" bit and taped it to a 1/4" FT. Hopefully I'll find a new bolt without too much aggrevation.

This happend to me twice, I nearly put a hammer through my windshield I was so frustrated. I took it to my mechanic he fixed it, went home went to re-tighten it and BANG snapped another one again back to the mechanic.

What is it with these staniless bolts? I think the stock material does a better job.

John.

I am dealing with this right now. I snapped one of the ss bolts off and have totally buggered the hole. I think I will have to have a local shop weld the hole and retap. What a frustration. Mine seized trying to loosen it back off. The manis weren't sitting properly due to y pipe turned a bit. Anyway, as I was trying to loosen everything completely and line everything back up, it snapped. I did a terrible job of trying to get it out and now the hole is too big and not centered where it was.

I'm really concerned now with removing the rest of the stainless bolts, but I'll be replacing the stainless bolts with the stock aluminum bolts as soon as I can find some at a decent price. Good luck.

I went to Fastenal and they couldn't help. They could if I wanted 5,000 1/2" x 4" hex bolts, but I wasn't in the market.

Here's an article on using aluminum solder as a repair method. From what I just read, this seems like a pretty straight forward method of repairing a damaged boss.

Personally I'd be reluctant to arc weld with all the electronics on the car, unless of course the supercharger was removed from the engine.
