Default Looking at a SRT6, weird tranny shift

I've test driven a SRT6 several times in the last few weeks. All was well until I U-turned the car and accelerated hard. The car went to what felt like a false neutral. I thought maybe I hit the shifter or something. My dad has a 2003 C320 that did something similar and now the tranny's being replaced. I decided to walk away...

Well, today I drove it again. I accelerated onto the highway to almost 80mph and coasted for a few seconds. All of a sudden, the car down shifted hard enough to chirp the back tires. I wasn't in the throttle at all. Any thoughts? I was hoping to purchase the car for cheap. Cheap enough so that worst case I wouldn't lose money if it needs tranny work but this was too scary!

Thoughts?

Just a random guess here. but maybe it was low on transmission fluid?
I'm a pretty new owner of an SRT-6 myself and still learning a lot about these cars, but I thought I recalled reading other message forum threads discussing odd downshifting and the like, which turned out to be caused by the fluid being a little bit low?

That would be great if that's all it was. I mentioned that to a mechanic friend when I looked at it a few weeks back. His comment was he's never seen fluid fix something like that. Who knows... I have a diag at the dealer scheduled for Thursday...

The elec plate with the solenoids might be the issue as many have had that problem here on the forum.
The other quick check would be to look under the cart before moving it to see if fluid is on the ground and if so it might be low on fluid. Still if it is low there would be a reason for that and a fix needed.

The O ring for the electrical input plug does sometimes fail on these trans so that could be the issue as well. The O ring is a pretty easy fix for a DIY if you are mechanically inclined but the plate is much more involved.
The plate can be had for around $300 and install depends on who you have do the work.....you doing it would be free of course. The O ring is around 7 bucks and fairly easy to do.
Good luck either way these cars are a lot of fun and pretty reliable if you take care of them. As with any automobile if abused they will let you know it with frequent problems.

Thanks for the input. My buddy who owns a tranny shop knows of the o ring failure. He keeps those in stock. We hoped my dad's 320 issue was the conductor plate. It showed that same kind of symptom. Unfortunately, in addition to those problems, he showed clutch slippage which meant it was more than just that. I still hoping this doesn't show slippage codes. I could deal with a o ring and conductor plate replacement...

for what it's worth....
here is a conductor plate, electrical connector and solenoid spring replacement compliments of G-AMG over at the W210 forum
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...tor-plate.html

I'm sure there are others out there, bit the pictures (and simplicity) impressed me.....and his little SD package, which I'm not sure would cut it on a Chrysler platform SRT-6.

BTW - I have an SLK230 with a 722.6 stuck in limp mode - Carsoft tells me it's the rear wheel speed sensor. Hopefully that's all it is and not the TCM or something else.
Although I've bee nunder there and checked out the wiring....not much to see as it tucks up and o ver the wheel arch.....I havent been able to work out how to get into the cavity where the sensor detects the passing speed tabs....TIA

Greets. Thanx to "Nugent", an attachment he included had some wonderful info on "advanced" re-programming of the ECU, rather than the "Default" re-program.

On the W463, and the W140, the "Standard" re-programming worked fine, but on the W210, I have never been happy with the shift quality going from 1st into 2nd. Following this tutorial, you can "Customize" each gear shift to your liking. I'm not sure how applicable this is for the W463, but it's the same tranny, so if someone wants a different feel, then give it a go!

1- With and already "warmed-up" vehicle (ie. tranny fluid 80C), find a quiet strech of road and "Reset" the ECU by closing doors, turn key to position "2", hold the accelerator all the way to the floor and HOLD for AT LEAST 5 seconds. Turn key OFF, but DON'T take it out of the ignition. Also DON'T open doors. Wait AT LEAST 2 Minutes

2- Start the vehicle, and place gear selector in "1". While GENTLY accelerating, you move the selector to "2" when you feel the shift point is to your liking (gentle, or a little more "racy"), but it looks like for the 112, and 113 engines, keep it UNDER 2,400 RPM.

3- After 2nd gear engages, slow down, and put back into "1", and repeat the whole process all over again AT LEAST 10 TIMES!

4- Then, move selector to "2", and manually upshift to "3" when it suits your taste. Slow down, downshift to "2", and repeat times 10

Well you get the idea. Continue the whole process, all the way up to 4th to 5th jump, but from 3 to 5, you ONLY have to repeat 4-5 TIMES, each.

After the "Up shift" portion, practice the "Down Shift" portion with:

1- 5th to 4th downshifts, 4 or 5 TIMES, 4th to 3rd, 3 to 2, and 2nd to 1st also 4 or 5 TIMES.

Sorry folks, but I left out one IMPORTANT step:

When you are done re-programming, YOU HAVE TO KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES, otherwise, the programming will not be memorized.

The whole process yields a MUCH more "Custom Tailored" shifting scheme. Apparently, this is because each shift module has SEPARATE training logic.

Hope this helps someone else.

Fun post to read again! It's been over a year and over 10 thousand miles and all is well. Oring was done and fresh fluid. Not a problem since.
