hi to you all im thinking of purchasing a 2005 srt6 crossfire. is there anything i should look for when inspecting car? also i was reading that the car was built in germany and has alot of slk parts is that true? if so is the motor american or mercades? thats funny because i just sold a 98 slk230 because of the over priced maintaince is this car going to be the same way? also whats a reasonable cost for this car with 40k miles in south florida thanks in advance tim bob

 

Essentially its a slk32. coupe with those miles 15-17k. There are several here on the forums for sape you should check out.

 

thanks bigjames so the motor is mercades who services them chysler?? how dependable are they. and i will check out cars on forum i bought my viper and corvette threw those forums but there is a local dealer who has one i havnt checked it out yet the rims were all screwed up in the pics thanks again tim bob

 

I would say the standard ones are very dependable , the srt will have more maintenance but typically most boosted cars doq. The 3.2 motor is a rock though. My 04 limited has had nothing but tires brakes and oil changes at 56k miles.

 

See if they'll throw in a couple IC pumps on the deal. LOL

You need to get busy and start reading through all the threads to get to know the car you want. There are several SRT6 coupes and 1 roadster I know of for sale on here. The price range is from $20K down to 15k.... There is even a fast little MB 32 for sale on here in the $17k range... But, it sounds like you don't know much about a car you want... That is a little strange to me.... Good luck...

 

oledoc2u i sold my wifes 98 slk 230 we were not going to replace it but now she wants a car we really dont like common things like cars you see alot of everyday we taught of a prowler but know a crossfire srt6 we saw online at a local dealer i always liked the cf. so i start researching car to find out its like a slk. the cars cool just dont know if i want to go back into mb again. thanks for the responce totally helps me decide on a car tim bob

 

was that the srt6 at Hiers mazda? It has damaged rims also....and they want 18995 for it.

 

yes thats the one like i said i hadnt gone to see it yet but noticed the one rim in the pic and sent them a message they said that the rims were bad i only buy very clean cars. so i decided to do some research on the cfs. i dont want to get into another mb i had a real nice one for 6 years with 40k. the maintance is just to much. but i will admit always liked the cfs but never considered buying one till now.thanks tim bob

 

Yeah, not to discourage you, but a Crossfire is definitely buying back into a Mercedes vehicle in most respects.... To me, that was actually a selling point and a GOOD thing, because I'm coming from a lot of headaches with American cars right now.

Chrysler is supposed to service them, since it's "their" car -- but they usually treat it like an oddball they wish would just go away so they don't have to deal with it anymore. Mercedes dealers, on the flip-side, usually won't work on a Crossfire since they're strict about only servicing cars with their own logo on them.

IMO, if you're not going to work on a Crossfire yourself, the trick is finding an independent Mercedes mechanic to take it to. (We've got at least 5 known reputable ones where I live.) They're going to be a lot cheaper than the Chrysler dealer, especially in cases where you can order the parts you need over the Internet first and bring them in for installation.

The XF's generally don't sell fast so you should be able to beat down the dealer on the price.
I've seen them discount $3-4K.

No problem... I'd agree with the person who said these don't usually sell real quickly from dealer lots. BUT, there's kind of a pattern to that. As I posted elsewhere on the forums, when I first started shopping for my Crossfire, I looked at a lot of nationwide listings every day. (Websites like New Cars, Used Cars - Find Cars at AutoTrader.com are useful here, but I used 4 or 5 different ones.)

What I saw was that a given dealer will list a Crossfire, usually at a price that ranges from "ridiculously high" to "the high end of acceptable", and it will sit on the lot. They're generally willing to fish for a buyer for 60 days before they start discounting the price. Right at the 60 day mark, you can expect to see that price drop by anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000. At that point, quite a few of them disappear (probably from people who see the "new, lower price!" tags and sale price ads they put out there, or from the occasional "smart shopper" who was watching and waiting for it to drop). The ones still remaining usually get a second round of price cuts after another 30 days pass. At that point, either it sells very quickly, OR it still sits and the dealer winds up trading it off to a different dealership to let them try selling it.

The dealers who keep one on their lot long past the 3 month mark are usually selling Crossfires in relatively poor condition with high mileage. They're just hoping for a cash-strapped customer looking for a budget ride at that point.

Incidentally, I went with an SRT-6 convertible myself (also decided it was an SRT-6 for me, or nothing), but unless you're really set on a convertible, I would probably just recommend the hard-top SRT-6. The convertibles have an ongoing issue with the back window glass suddenly falling out, and Chrysler has only made good on repairing them as an "extended warranty" thing in specific cases.

You can learn a LOT about the "weak spots" with these cars by reading these forums, though. Biggest ones I keep seeing are problems with the ignition key jamming up/refusing to turn, a relay board next to the car battery that develops bad/cracked solder connections over time, or mechanical relays on it get dirty or burn up, leading to weird "car won't start / wait 5 minutes and now car starts fine" issues and the like, and SRT-6's where the supercharger only operates intermittently (bad supercharger coolant pump).

All this stuff is fixable for far less expense than a dealer would charge you, especially when you know how to identify the cause of your problem. (You can tell a mechanic exactly what you want done that way, vs. paying for "troubleshooting".)
