Default looking for pics/notes on 178/181/185mm install...

searched for some hour or so....okay so I got distracted!....
didnt find anything in the doc collection....

Has anyone stacked a C3 65 with a 185? 25psi maybe a little hot....amongst other things...but if you can keep the AIT's down (-15kW of heat) that's nudging 450+hp

I could be reading this wrong - but I'm sensing a little...."dont test the limits"..."others have gone before"...
apologies....
sounds like 25psi is off limts.....

Well, when you spin the supercharger fast enough to reach 25 psi you create lots of problems. I have heat problems at 19 PSI, the beginnings of fueling problems too. Many don't at my boost levels but they daily drive or 1/4 mile drive and I track my car on a road course which is different. Crank up the boost if you want, get a trophy number at the track and then back it down to where the engine will live a respectable mileage. Well, that's my opinion. It may be cheaper in the long run to custom make an intake manifold and throw on a bigger blower. That's the direction the E55 guys are going after hitting the wall with their superchargers.

ran off some figures from my "ever developing model"....for 6000rpm....

pred. shaft hp__ density kg/m3 ____pulley & cool setup _______________Fuel lb/hr/injector___intake cfm ______rpm
350___________2.08 _________74/155 stock 14.5psi 9kW cool 122F AIT _______42____________640 _______6000_____STOCK
+29__________ 2.25 _________65/155 18.5psi stock9kW Cool 154F AIT________46____________694 _______3500____COMFORTABLE
+50__________ 2.38 _________65/155 18.5psi stock9+8kWCool 122F AIT _____48____________733________ 6000____SWEET
+77__________ 2.54 _________65/185 25psi Stock9Cool 194F AIT ___________52____________783 ________2000____COOKED!
+130_________ 2.85__________65/185 25psi 9+22kW Cool 122F AIT _________58____________879 _______6000_____CRAZY!!!!

All seems to make sense - even at 18.5psi you gotta get a whole lotta cooling if you are running over 3500rpm consistently.....might be hard to achieve tho....so you could risk a 65mm without too much concern unless you're hill climbing or something
PS - I'm assuming stock AIT at 6000rpm is 122F and the stock IC+circuit is pulling about 9-10kW out of the system.
the rpm is the "averaged" figure you could run before the stock cooler begins to get overloaded and AIT's climb.
It may be that the stock cooler will be overloaded at 6000rpm to begin with. Ive assumed it isnt though - still working on reality checks on this.
It also assumes a constant eff. on the SC of 65%....need to work on that, 'cause I know it drops off above 20psi
PS - 12.8 AFR

These might raise a conversation - but hey - lets have it....!

I think Les put it in a nutshell for you. So the question is; what is it you are wanting to do, or prove, with your car? There is already plenty of information here in this Forum to make an educated decision on what pulley(or combo)to go with. For some of us, like myself, making the decision can be difficult though.

I ran a 65mm supercharger pulley for over a year with no problems. A little hot at the track but nothing too bad. To give you an idea what your facing, at a 1/2 mile event with a 178 pulley, supercooler, spraying water/meth I hit 180º IAT's at 140 mph. By the time I slowed to 40 for the return straight the IAT's were about 135º. They drop fast but keeping them from climbing is proving real difficult. Someone needs to find a way to cool the lifter valley where the intercooler lives.

should I go into an analysis of the potatoe bake here or....
hmmm...
oh okay.... why not.

Baked Potatoe....
Couple of Q's......
Aluminium Foil.....great for radiant heat - also good for picking up any passing hot air...but if its cold air....das gutte yah....!
So next Q - I'm guessing the foil may be in direct contact with the Lifter valley. Is it contact at points or surfaces?
I've never had it out - but is it possible to get a couple of mm clearance (air gap) here?

Can the mounts be spaced up to facilitate this? Of course that would require some re-engineering of a few things. But a couple of mm - good - a few? - that takes care of the conductive component of heat....
then one could think about some possibly smarter materials - something like the jet ceramic coat (or other) for the radiant component and then....
somehow pick up a cold air intake, maybe from under the car somehow and drive it in the gap - maybe even a smallish 12V fan and remove the convective component...maybe a cryo blast (careful of the thermal shock)...;>)

Aside - I think the 3mm phenolic spacers may have a role to play here.....

Ice box.....
1kg of ice melting over a minute is equivalent to 5kW.....hmm...not bad. If it lasts longer - then lower that number...2mins...2.5kW...3mins 1.7kW...........maybe loose a hp or 2 for the eski in the back...;>) remember - we're chasing 10-20kW of cooling over stock.
Overflow might be an issue at some tracks (I think someone pointed out)

I have a 10mm spacer between the sc and ic. 3mm between the sc and heads. 3mm between the manifolds and sc. I have a ceramic coated ic, y pipe, and snout. I have a separated coolant system vented to atmosphere. I have a giant heat exchanger and two pumps. Results are the same as everybody else. About 20 above driving mellow. 30 to 35 when driving fast.

That makes me sad tunaglove. It means I'm stuck where I'm at for the most part. But I'm going to keep playing with heat exchangers and pumps. If I find a cheap intercooler to play with .... wait, Waldig is working on it already. I'll wait for his solution and see if I understand it.

All you can do is buy some time....

Cermaic blankets will slow/block heat soak from the engine....

Large IC's and HE's will provide a few extra minutes of cooling...

Both will speed up recovery time.....

But in the end, ambient temperature wins the day.......

This sounds very interesting. That's what I like about Woody; Rather than pontificate, he gets busy, does the work, meticulously tests, and if it's cost effective, Rob produces it for the rest of us. Gotta love it.

FYI, I thought that this had some value, just dont know how much value, price is right for the killer chiller testing groups. Iam no there OBTW.

HEY did you notice that the Professor Brave is still on the air?? Wooo WOOOO! Great.

More interesting is the intercooler that someone has for 500$, might be a stocking stuffer for the future, keep looking at it and thinking it would go well with my spare starter...........
