Custom intake
Hi all, i am going to start putting together my own DIY dual intake and i was going through the engine bay thread and saw SRT Steve's image (attached below). I was wondering if anyone knew what filters those are and how to attach the pipe to the front of them to the front of the car.
Those look like standard 3" cone filters to me. If you are going that route, make sure you're building some sort of cover/casing for them otherwise you'll just be hurting performance sucking in all that underhood hot air.
I was going to use something like this: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewi...id=20886992215
But decided the end cost was going to be close to the NW setup (when I got it on sale) and not near as clean looking .
And as far as attaching to the front. The NW setup uses a 3" silicone tube on the pass side and 2.5" silicone tube on the drivers side. You have to remove the plastic factory inserts to wedge them through. On the front side, I have the "devil horns" to help direct the air.

Couldn't see the price of "devil horns" myself..so I made up my own scoops. Running filters under the hood into the stock air box didn't hurt my temps any and I'm now pulling air in through 2 3" tubes. "Expect" intake air temps to come down when I remove the OEM cover and replace with a "y" setup.
Ironically - was test fitting pipes from Ebay and bought one.. then a week later the other side. Temps were lower by 10-15 degrees running the drivers side cone and OEM setup on the passenger side.. (N/A Crossfire). About all I can figure is the cone was the primary air flow and kept that side of the air box from heat soaking - keeping temps down.

So how would i keep the 3 inch pipe attached to the front of the filters as pictured in the first post..The back of the filter has the clamps but on most filters i dont see anything like that on the front side of it.? And i will eventually be making some covers/casings for the filters and run the NW devil horns in the front.
Here is my version of "devil horns" that I made for my newest SLK32. I expect that the space behind the SRT6 grill is similar. This set up was designed around using SL55 air intake tubes and retaining factory grill.
I added an ambient air temp sensor to the passenger side scoop. The power-steering cooling line was reshaped a little to pass behind the scoops.
The last pic shows it all in place along with my monster frozenboost HE
Cheers,
Chris

Obviously no sig. impact on engine/oil temps.

I was surprised as that was my first - and final - design attempt. Just had to roll the edge a little where those lines laid in.. and the other side took a little more manual massaging to clear things, but worked out fairly well. Planning on breaking out the black paint next time I'm in there..
Preaching to the converted - but I'm liking this snout MM. The more velocity pressure (speed of air) you can ram into these horns the better. Velocity pressure is energy and will ultimately end up as more boost if you can get it in there. The funnelling effect adds to this effort. The more funnelling the better.....hey

Hope yours fires back - track and target hostile thing.... from what little I've read you get hit with laser your done..or they know you just jammed them.. LOL.
having equipment on your car intended to Jam police laser is frowned upon (and can get you an equipment violation in Ca) . ... I hesitate to use the word JAM ... but I gotta tell you there is little that is more entertaining than watching LEO scratch his head when his equipment wont lock on my car .... right until I drop below the posted speed limit
I've seen that show nearly a dozen times .... it is priceless
EDIT
No disrespect intended towards LEO (law enforcement officers) . They have an important job to do and I appreciate the risks they take on behalf of myself and others in the interest of the safety of the general public. I have friends in law enforcement and even donate to the highway patrol. Lidar (laser) is an unfair tool and I have no regrets when it comes to avoiding it.
